What is your opinion of the First Lady (any First Lady) appearing on the Oscars ceremony broadcast?

Asked by jca (36062points) February 27th, 2013

As you may or may not know, Michelle Obama was on the Academy Awards broadcast on Sunday night, February 24, 2013. She was at another location, The Governors’ Ball which was at the White House. She announced the nominees for a certain award, and then the winner.

To me, it was kind of youthful and fun, and IMHO Michelle Obama is youthful and fun.

I heard today on the radio that some right-wing media outlets (they specified The Washington Post op-ed and Rush Limbaugh radio show) were harshly critical of her, saying it demeans the FLOTUS and POTUS.

What is your opinion of this?

Boo friggity hoo.

They need to get the stick surgically removed from their collective asses.

I saw the dance thing on Youtube yesterday. It was a funny skit. I approve.

Lovely dress she wore! (the Iranian photoshopped one)

The Governor’s Ball was not held at the White House. The White House is in Washington DC. The Academy held it’s Governor’s Ball at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood.

I don’t find it any more disconcerting as when Gerald and Betty Ford went on the first “People’s Choice” Award. The Oscars are more dignified, plus they are huge in terms of world appreciation for American Culture and American business.

I thought she looked very glamorous. I thought she did a great job. I did not want to see my political representatives messing around with Hollywood, as if they are nothing but pretty faces in fancy dresses. I have to say that I agree that it demeans the FLOTUS and I am surprised—very surprised—that Limbaugh should actually take such a progressive point of view. Next thing you know, he’ll be advocating for equal rights for women!

@jca: “saying it demeans the FLOTUS and POTUS.”

oh, f*cking please. I thought these shit-tards were glad we kicked the British out. Are they advocating for some kind of royal family crap?

I don’t really care what tv shows they do, for the most part. I’m glad they do talk shows, because they get a chance to reach the part of the population that watches that stuff and no news, or only Fox News.

I’m not so sure about the Oscars, though. It would have been awkward if Zero Dark Thirty had won. Maybe not in a way that would have mattered to Americans, but from outside, it would have looked pretty damned weird.

These dumb fuckers are forever whining about one thing or another, best ignored.
I don’t really have an opinion except to say she likes the camera, her hair looked wrong though.

Why isn’t the President allowed to have any fun without people whining about it for 30 years, let alone his wife! She is not the President! She is only so much in the public eye because the media is so BORED with everything else. I like her and I don’t see anything wrong with her being on the Oscars though I thought that the Oscars themselves were a crapshoot. So boring. Not funny. Same movies.

The ironic part of the “demeans POTUS and FLOTUS” criticism is that Rush and his ilk are doing that 8 hours a day on talk radio and Fox. So this is a clear case of the pot calling the kettle black.

If the Queen could do a bit for the Olympics, the First Lady can appear at the Oscars.

I had mixed feelings. On the one hand, I think she was one of the very few really classy people to make an appearance, and I was happy to see her. On the other hand, I felt she was preaching at me at an event that should have been entertaining me. Yes, a little preaching isn’t a bad thing, and her message was a good one. But it just seemed out of whack with the rest of the mostly sophomoric program.

I didn’t see anything wrong about it.

I’m not a big supporter of Obama’s political party, but I find nothing wrong about his wife doing the awards thing. It’s just an award, nothing too life altering to get your panties in a bunch.

Gotta say… she looked hot.
I’d inaugurate her

Doesn’t bother me at all.

I don’t think being in that position should put any undue burdens on your ability to enjoy yourself and avail yourself of something that, like her, you obviously wanted to do.

Some people will whinge about anything. What are they trying to divert attention from?

Sunny2's avatar

I thought it was fine and done very tastefully. She’s a modern president’s wife and using her position very well.

I think it is fine. If Laura Bush had done it I think it would be fine. Doesn’t matter which First Lady. A lot of the country is on the same page so to speak, many of us tune in to see who won an Oscar, having our First Lady present is kind of fun.

If Queen Elizabeth can jump from a helicopter, I think Michelle Obama can be on the Oscar’s. LOL.

I think she looked great & sounded great.

They’re just jealous. She was on the Oscars. That’s much more prestigious than the presidency, or any political life.

I really liked the dress. I didn’t see the point of her appearance; but beyond that, it didn’t matter, since they didn’t spend taxpayer’s money to fly her to LA.

@jca and @zenvelo: She and the President hosted a dinner for the National Governor’s Association that evening.

It is now official that the show has Jumped the Shark

I don’t have a problem with it, she is only the wife of someone, not the SOMEONE. I don’t like seeing the president himself on the late night talk shows though. To me, that just doesn’t seem appropriate.
