Your opinion on J.J. Abrams directing both Star Trek and Star Wars?

Asked by rockfan (14627points) March 6th, 2013 from iPhone

I hope the new Star Wars film will at least have a different tone than J.J. Abrams previous movies. But Michael Arnt, the screenwriter for Toy Story 3, is doing the script, so I’m really excited. What do you think?

He should have done Star Wars from the beginning and kept his greasy hack hands away from Star Trek. They should have brought Nicholas Meyer back to Direct/Write Star Trek, and Harve Bennett is still alive, too.
The two together made The Wrath of Khan, which is still the best of the Star Trek Movies, and Meyer did The Undiscovered Country, which is the second best.

@ragingloli Srsly.

Besides, Jonathan Frakes and LeVar Burton are both directors in their own rights. In fact, Frakes is directly responsible for the awesomeness of First Contact. So I don’t see why he’s not more involved in these movies.

Star Wars began & ended with the original trilogy, nowt else amounts to a hillobeans.
As for Trek, well, I won’t go there…ever!

Rags and I have had this discussion before. I loved the new Star Trek as I thought it was moribund after “Enterprise” and every movie after Star Trek 6.

Similarly, the Star Wars franchise was dead to me after Star Wars Episode 1 (although I stomached 2 and 3 because I had to).

Amen.

Oh I am perfectly aware that Rick Berman butchered and mutilated Star Trek from Generations onwards with a rusty knife, but then came along Abrams and turned it into a hideous monster from John Carpenter’s “the Thing”.
Would have been preferrable to let it die and spare it that fate.

No wonder Obama is confusing them.

@ragingloli I do agree with you, though, that I do miss the deeper aspect of Star Trek with the morality commentary such as racism and sexism. JJ turned it into Mission Impossible.

Bring on the lens flare – _ -

I recall reading an interview with Abrams with him saying he didnt want to direct Star Wars because he was such a big fan of the series and would thus be better for Star Trek beings he wasn’t a fan. I couldn’t disagree with this way of thinking more. You’re a huge fan of star wars, do a bloody Star Wars movie than, don’t try and make Star Trek into a Star Wars movie.

As someone old enough to have seen the original Star Wars (episode 4) at a drive-in when it was originally released – I’m pretty excited.

Honestly, never gave it a moment of thought.

Anyone would do better, even Mickey Mouse directing the new SW films. Lucas screwed his franchise in the ass with 1,2 and 3 so yeah, I’ll be fine if Hannibal Lecter or Dick Cheney direct this. And Arndt I’m really excited about. Glad to hear Lawrence Kasdan is involved again too.

It annoys and saddens me.

Though I’ve never been a Star Wars fan…never even seen the films, actually…I don’t see why he wouldn’t do as well with that brand as he has with Star Trek (for which I am a fan).

Rarebear's avatar

…you’ve never seen the films?...

SABOTEUR's avatar

@Rarebear I’ve never seen Star Wars. Star Trek, as you know, preceded Star Wars. When Star Wars came out, I immediately developed an unreasonable hatred for the brand (”...how dare they encroach on Star Trek territory…!”), so I’ve never developed an interest in Star Wars or anything Star Wars related.

^^ But SW was from a far, far away galaxy….not far enough-? : )

SABOTEUR's avatar

^^^ Far enough to be irrelevant, as far as I’m concerned.

Here is news @ragingloli Abrams doing a Star Trek, Star Wars crossover animated film
