How can I trust the specialist?

Asked by chelle21689 (7907points) March 14th, 2013 from iPhone

I have a very difficult time believing this. I have had frequent palpitations; sometimes 10 per minutes. I’ll have then all day and its been a year.

I had two EKGs done by my general doctor in October and January. He said I’m fine. I didn’t believe him, especially when I started to feel dizzy and breathless…. So I went to see a specialist yesterday.

He took another EKG and an echocardiogram. My heart is fine and he said the PVC are benign and a 100 year old can live with this.

Now that I feel it’s benign and I am healthy I don’t feel breathless and dizzy anymore (mind thing?) but I still feel my palpitations!

I’m still scared its going to stop. I already saw two different doctors and I’m still frustrated that my heart feels weird

Join an online focus/sharing group for people with heart palipations. You can find them through the American Heart Association at heart.org

It helps to be able to talk to people who have real life experience. I think @YARNLADY‘s suggestion is a good one. There is no getting around the value of people who have been there.

Anyone can have the occasional racing heart, palpitations or panic attack. They’ve happened to me on more than one occasion, for no particular reason that I can recall (that is, there was no undue stress at the time, I was resting when it happened, and it went away a few minutes later as quickly as it came over me). When it becomes a problem is when it occurs with more frequency or severity – and being breathless and dizzy is the borderline where it may be a real problem – then it’s worth having it investigated more thoroughly. But if you’ve been to a heart specialist and that person sees no reason for concern, then unless it happens again soon, I’d try to let that be an end to it.

You don’t want to overstress “all that could happen”, because you don’t want the stress of worry to be a cause for new problems. Try to let it go. “Stuff happens, and you survive.”

Was the specialist a cardiologist?

Remind me again, have you had your thyroid checked?

Does your racing heart happen when you are resting, like before you fall asleep or if you wake up in the middle of the night?

Yes, cardiologist. I asked if it could be my thyroid but he said he highly doubts it since there’s no signs or symptoms of anything. My heart doesn’t race. Just beats weird and pauses

@chelle21689 Did they bother to do the $15 thyroid blood test (might be a little more expensive where you are, don’t hold me to the price).

My arrythmia is only detectable at night, and much more pronounced when my thyroid is whacko. My missed beats never showed on an EKG done at a doctor’s office. However, my problem is benign, and most likely yours is too, assuming there actually is any problem. I believe there is something go on. I don’t think it is in your head. Maybe your GP did test your thyroid.

I had severe heart palpitations (pre atrial contractions) for several months as frequent as 1 palpitation per 3 heart beats. My family practice doctor told me that the palpitations were non life threatening and there was no medication that will stop them. This was verified by my cardiologist who gave be a stress test to see if the palpitation would get less frequent as physical stress increased. I stayed on the tread mill for over 21 minutes (a heart patient record) and my heart rate went over 200 bpm all the while the frequency of the palpitations remained constant. the cardiologist also told me that the palpitations were non life threatening and offered nothing to relieve the palpitations.

I got considerable relief from the palpitations by using the “Emotional Freedom Technique”. I learned how to stop them. I rarely get them anymore and can stop them quickly.

Good health to you!

I had the same symptoms (and a few more) and it turned out to be a caffeine allergy. I stopped drinking tea and coffee and all better!

$15? Wow it’s like 100 for me lol but I have no insurance.

Anyways I don’t drink caffiene and it still happens. I mostly drink water. I’ll look up that technique. I’m just still a bit paranoid about my heart even though we did tests. I might be a bit of a hypochondriac cuz now I worry some symptoms are life threatening

@chelle21689 If I do a thyroid test through insurance they bill $120 to insurance, insurance gets it down to $50 and I pay $9.50. The way they bill is a total scam. Are you sure out of pocket for just TSH was $100? Or, that was for a thyroid panel? Did they do the test? Is that why you know how much it costs?

chelle21689's avatar

I asked how much it’d cost and that’s what the doc said

@chelle21689; Since you have had three EKGs over the past six months that indicate that your heart is fine, why not consider anxiety?

Before you continue to press for medical tests that make no sense, what about considering therapy for the anxiety? Panic attacks generate symptoms that are very unpleasant…some or all of those listed below: Mayo Clinic info

Sense of impending doom or danger
Fear of loss of control or death
Rapid heart rate
Sweating
Trembling
Shortness of breath
Hyperventilation
Chills
Hot flashes
Nausea
Abdominal cramping
Chest pain
Headache
Dizziness
Faintness
Tightness in your throat
Trouble swallowing

@gailcalled I absolutely agree can be anxiety. But, almost all those symptoms can be thyroid also. Overactive thyroid is common enough in young women they should at least run the blood test.
