What's up with those necklaces that baseball players wear?

Why do they all look the same (the necklace, not the players). They’re woven necklaces that look like they’re made of hemp. Is it a good luck thing? Where did it originate from?

Most of them wear large gold chains. (Sort of like mine is bigger than yours—contract I mean, of course).

I think it’s just a bling thing for some. With the hemp, you’d be surprised how many baseball players and just laid-back hippies with serious athleticism….
