1. A lack of information and is curable.
2. Sometimes alright if you couldn’t do anything about it anyway.
3. Dangerous (sometimes.)
4.A coping mechanism.

One can, of course, be simply ignorant of specific facts in a particular subject matter which precludes any negative connotation the word may imply.
Or, as my original answer suggests… here.

is a lack of knowledge or information. It is curable just give the ignorant the information they need lol.

I also hate when people use the word ignorant as a substitute for stupid when they mean something totally different.

linguaphile's avatar

I agree, @JoeyOhSoClever, except when a person chooses to remain ignorant by ignoring new information, choosing instead to hold on to old beliefs because they came first or came from a more likable source.

In that case, it no longer is ignorance but moves closer to stupidity. Or obstinacy.

Ignorance is not being smart enough to know you’re ignorant.

Sunny2's avatar

ignoring or lacking information. It’s easily repaired unless you choose to ignore it.

JoeyOhSoClever's avatar

@linguaphile Exactly. Which brings up the point that ignorance is probably worsened when a person is also stubborn.

@linguaphile. Great comment. Ties in nicely with mine about Sarah and Michelle.

I believe it’s known as willful ignorance, a clear distinction from a simple lack of knowledge in a particular field of expertise.
