Does anyone have experience with feline pancreatitis?

Asked by figbash (7483points) May 22nd, 2013

I asked a different shade of this question earlier, one about feeding a cat on an esophageal tube, and it seems that not many jellies have had experience with this. I just thought I would try again and see if anyone here has had a cat with pancreatitis, since it seems to be fairly common. I think my vet is doing most of what she can medically, but would love some anecdotal experience or suggestions, too. I’m really struggling to find guidance, even from specialized community groups.

I’m interested in how long it took to treat, how it was treated, what steps you took and if there is perhaps something I’m missing.

Thanks, in advance.

Because people on this site are so against anything smacking of alternative remedies I hesitated to post this.

Regardless of whether you like alternative medicine or not, I think the guy makes some good points. Sorry I couldn’t come up with more help for you. http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2010/10/05/pancreatitis-in-pet-cats.aspx

My daughter just moved to Japan. She doesn’t get migraines over there. Know why? There are no preservatives in their food!

It’s no great leap of logic to understand that just maybe cats don’t do well with additives in their food either.

Thank you! I am open to all different kinds of treatments. In fact, we’re trying a course of acupuncture next week. Some have balked, but for others who have actually given it a shot, acupuncture really works on many cats.

My primary care vet and internal med vet do consult with a holistic vet for alternative remedies and we’ve tried a few of those. One, called slippery elm, is something I swear made a huge difference.

The main problem with natural remedies is that cats are very finicky and react very strongly to flavors they don’t like, including foaming at the mouth or just vomiting the whole thing up. This can set you back pretty far when every feeding counts. Many of the holistic tinctures, teas and drams are very strong tasting/smelling and haven’t gone over well. Still, I keep trying!

Thanks for weighing in. I’ve had a really hard time finding people who have had this experience.

Be very careful when using herbs or essential oils on cats. They don’t do well with quite a few of them. Best to get someone who knows before you start experimenting on your own.

@snowberry – definitely! I don’t dare make any move putting anything into this kitty at all, unless it’s been run through the vet and the internist with a final check with the allergist.

I’m the most neurotic cat mom, ever but this little guy has been so sick, that I take all steps very lightly.

Would masking the tinctures with fish oil help?
