Should eating and driving be illegal?

Asked by Judi (40025points) June 4th, 2013

Personally, I feel less distracted with a phone in my hand than with a burrito.
Would corporate America rise up and scream because of the lost revenue from drive through chains?
What other distractions can you think of that aren’t illegal but seem to be worse than a phone?

Worse than a phone: stress, tiredness, someone distracting you in the car

^^ “Someone distracting you in the car”: Definitely. Especially kids…

ragingloli's avatar

@longgone
I recommend Sedi Seat for loud kids in the car.

YARNLADY's avatar

Yes. Cars should be made with a separate driving compartment for the driver with zero distractions.

@ragingloli the picture never changed. (Maybe its just my iPhone. ) can you translate?

@Judi
It is an advertisment for a fictional child car seat that has an integrated sedative injection system.

…”‘cause in the car, only an unconscious child is a good one.”
@ragingloli haha, love it! Those children’s voices are incredibly annoying

I think a police officer running out in front of your vehicle, to stop you, should be illegal. This happened once to me. I was going 75 km/h in a 60 km/h area (most people speed in this stretch). Any ways, he ran out on to the road and waved me down. Scared the crap out of me…I almost hit him and the railing as I swerved. I know I was breaking the law and I don’t contest that, but he shouldn’t have ran out like that. Nuts.

I think certain foods shouldn’t be allowed whilst driving. Messy/drippy foods, or large items, food that requires both hands…and super hot food.
This reminds me of a local commercial that came out when the distracted driver law came into effect. They were trying to show what other actions may get you pulled over (other than cell phone usage). It showed a guy driving while holding an open burger in each hand (two burgers). I was like, “Who the heck does that?!”

In-N-Out would have to change its name and its concept.

I’m generally opposed to hamburgers or burritos, but eating popcorn or cracker jacks or a handful of cashews should be okay.

Eating is not as distracting as talking on the phone. Having said that, I do think eating while driving can be dangerous, depending partly on what you are eating. You probably know that it took German car manufactures a while to get the hint that they need to make bigger more cup holders in the cars they export to America, because Europeans treat driving more seriously. I eat and drink in my car maybe three times a year, extremely rare. My husband doesn’t either, so if they make it illegal it won’t affect me much.

When my husband lived in Bogata they had just changed last call to 1:00am I think? Something fairly early for a bar to be shutting down. The theory was sleepy driving is so dangerous it would cut diwn on car accidents if people were not out so late, and it worked. Bars opened early and were full at earlier hours than before, and accidents went down.

I think cell phones are more distracting. I eat way more than I talk on the phone, though, so maybe it’s just what I am used to. It’s best I don’t even drive at all because I am so easily distracted by the simplest things. I once missed three exits trying to get off of a highway because I couldn’t focus my attention. I missed the exit I was supposed to get off of, the second exit that I could have gotten off of as well, and the third exit to help me turn around the quickest.

A burrito or a footlong subway sandwich should be allowed for expert knee drivers only. All the rest of you lousy drivers should stick with fajita pocket pitas.

@gondwanalon I was just thinking about how to phrase the same thing then read your answer.
Good job!

Short skirts and high heels.

Let’s just outlaw driving. Obviously no one is capable of driving while doing anything.

peridot's avatar

Would it matter if it were made illegal? That won’t stop “bulletproof” teenagers, multitasking soccer mommies, nor anyone else from keeping right on doing it. It hasn’t stopped people from texting or talking while driving, has it? (I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve even seen cops with phones to one ear.)

Remember, everyone else on the road is a homicidal idiot… you’re special.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

You ever notice how idiots coming out of fast food places always pull out in front of you when you’re way to close to each other? Is that crap really so good you’ll risk lives for it?

cookieman's avatar

All I know is if eating and driving had always been illegal, I would have starved to death the sixteen years I worked two jobs. My car was the only place I had time to eat usually.

Judi's avatar

Just to be clear, I’m not proposing it, I just thought it would be an interesting conversation.

Pachy's avatar

Definitely not if there’s a waiter and sommelier in the car with you.

El_Cadejo's avatar

What really drives me fucking nuts is when I’m driving down the road, see a cop and panic and then realize that asshole is driving down the road(poorly) while talking on his cell phone. Ohhh so that’s how this works…
Clearly police officers have more brain power to multitask~

Cupcake's avatar

Shuffling through music.
Applying makeup.

And it’s mostly messy food that is distracting, especially if you drop bits in your lap.

peridot's avatar

Speaking of distractions, how about things like sign wavers and LED billboards that change messages. I mean, if accidents via distraction are a serious problem, all forms of distraction should be addressed. Advertising does not get a pass here!

Plucky's avatar

@peridot I can’t stand those LED billboards. We don’t have tons where I live but they do exist… I detest each and every one of them!
