Do oil and vinaigrettes affect one's sobriety?

Asked by Unbroken (10746points) June 18th, 2013

I have recently visited several taste testing rooms for olive oils and balsamic vinaigrettes. I don’t eat the bread samples just the various flavors and combinations.

I often start feeling flushed and ebullient. The first couple of times I thought it might be due to dehydration, heat or hunger.

Yet it continues and the last time I noticed it in the friends I brought with me.

What causes this?

Might you be allergic to a flavoring ingredient in the oils and vinegars? I would read the labels closely to see if there are added preservatives, too.

We have a fancy place nearby with dozens of flavors and my fiancĂ© loves the stuff, and we’ve bought several bottles over the past year. He’s never commented to me about feeling flush, nor have I felt it – and I am allergic to sulfites in wines (which are also used as coloring and preservatives).

It’s the vinegar.

There’s a teensy bit of residual alcohol in balsamic vinegars, on the order of 0.1 to 2% depending on how it was aged. If you’re very sensitive to alcohol and took in a fair amount of vinegar at 2%, you might feel it.

Are they wine vinegars? You should avoid those.

Oh yes I should. Thank you for clearing this up for me.
