What is the best way to prevent trashing my rubbish bin?

Asked by Unbroken (10746points) September 3rd, 2013

Today was trash day per usual I put out the trash curbside before work and after work took it back.

I’ve been having this problem where everyone walking or biking by will drop their trash in after the trash has been taken. They only remove bagged items.

It bothers me that I have to turn over the bin and dump it out and pick up the trash to bag it. I usually console myself with rather here then on the ground. But today a partially filled beer bottle which drenched the bottom and some undies that were more then just beer soaked. Who does that?!

Well the bin is large the outer rim is larger and its a tight squeeze and sometimes drops down when I put my bagged trash in it. I sprung for the heavy duty stretch ones a couple of times I made it worked ok but the garbage collectors took that along with the rest leaving me in the same spot.

That and I resented wasting the bags I normallty wouldn’t have bought I am cheap when it comes to throw away items and don’t like waste.

Is there another solution or do I just have to suck it up?

We’re about to find out how good your sign making skills are. I like the nice signs that have smiley faces dotting the i’s and swirly embellishments underscoring the words. Maybe add some color and flowers too. Yes, flowers painted on a trash can. That’ll teach em’!

Not so good with flowers but I can do ivy and trees well enough. I am sure there is a paint that sticks to plastic at a craft store. So you think it would help? Worth a shot anyway. Also better then dumping my trash in piles and sticking a tarp over it. Which seems to be the method of choice in the neighborhood.

Thanks

You could place a small, open bin next to your regular one. You’d have to buy it, but it would be cleaner and trash still wouldn’t end up on the floor.

Totally unnacceptable that people are throwing trash in your bin. I’m guessing you are in Europe? Where people I think are accustomed to reading signs on bins that say recycle or trash only, paper goods etc. I would make a sign for the top and sides stating either “private trash bin” or, “bagged trash only.” Something to that effect. You could add, “under video surveillance.”

Can you ask for the community you live in to supply a couple city trash cans for your block?

Lol @JLeslie. I am the one who has to clean it every week. It is a minor thing. And no I don’t recycle. It is not cost effective and our program is so new we can’t tell if its effective. Used to spend more energy hauling them to centers.

The city only outs trash bins in the parks and in my neighborhood they are all chained down. So it wouldn’t be likely to happen and it wouldn’t start in my neighborhood if it did. But good idea

@Unbroken in my community the bins are to be left up by our garage, not down curbside….however my grandparents ( when alive) lived in the city. Like you my grandpa had enough of people walking down the alley and filling his garbage cans. What he did was chain the lids on and lock them in place all days.

On the morning of garbage day he’d unlock the chains. He also alerted the garbage company and his garbage men of the issues he was having. This alert kept them on the lookout for people illegally dumping.

What you may want to do is discuss this issue your local govt. We have local laws preventing people from dumping in private trash cans and dumpsters punishable with a fine.

Also what @JLeslie asked above is valid. If you have so many people walking around with trash in their hands the community should step up to fill that need. Here in my community the issue was dog waste dumping, so our village added bags and waste receptacles on walk paths.

@Unbroken I didn’t ask if you recycle, i just meant in many public places, like airports, stadiums, even in parks they probably have trash cans and recycle cans so people are used to reading before they throw stuff out. In America it is very hit and miss. Some parts of America separate their trash from recycle in public areas and other places don’t.
