Meta Question

tom_g's avatar

Are you trying to get me to stop procrastinating?

Asked by tom_g (16638points) November 19th, 2013

First, “General” gets a nice “child porn” question title. Then “Social” has a “paedophile” one. I am not feeling comfortable having my work’s traffic scanners picking up these terms over and over today, so I can’t visit.

Can’t we keep this out of the titles? That way you can choose whether or not you want to hit your work with possible trigger words?

Looks like a few of us will be hanging out in Meta today!

I am not sure how to convey the topic of a question without stating the topic in the question title. If anyone has a reasonable solution, please share.

Perhaps Fluther could introduce a filter in which all questions containing certain terms could be temporarily turned off for individuals who do not wish to view questions on those topics.

Perhaps there is an extension/add-on that will filter out certain terms. I know there exists some extensions in Google Chrome that will filter out all search results containing terms like “Miley Cyrus.” There is another one that changes all textual instances of “cloud” to “butthole.” So I am sure it is doable.

@tom_g But you’re visiting now, isn’t that kinda like closing the barn door after the horse has run off? lol

tom_g's avatar

@Coloma – If every single time I visit fluther or simply move from General to Social and back, I send those terms to my work, I am not sure it will look good. Maybe it is like closing the door after only one horse had run off. Why let them all out?

Also, I am on my phone as a result. That is how I posted this question. Now only the NSA and Verizon will see my activity.

ucme's avatar

I think maybe you’d have been best served sending the two users in question a pm…perhaps.

tom_g's avatar

@dafox – let me try…

“Is child porn really that easy to find?”

“Are inappropriate photos of children really that easy to find?”

(or something like that?)

Coloma's avatar

@tom_g I see, well…maybe just stick to the safe zone of your phone.

[As a mod} Good points. The Qs in question are being edited to remove the hot terms from the titles.

Flagging is a useful technique.

tom_g's avatar

^ Did that hours before posting this question. Also, I just wanted to bring this to everyone’s attention. Also, I could be way off here. Some people don’t have any problem with it. Ideally, I wouldn’t even want the reworded question title (with “sexual” in it). Oh well.

I understand the reasoning behind the request but I hate the see good English bowdlerized. Maybe don’t Fluther at work or as you say, use your phone.

We had talked about a NSFW tab in the past but since no development is being done….

tom_g's avatar

@janbb: “Maybe don’t Fluther at work or as you say, use your phone.”

I know. I could definitely use this as motivation to stop using fluther at work. It certainly wouldn’t hurt my actual work. :)

I am fully aware that this is my thing. In fact, I just realized that I had posted this
back in 2011.

I’ll see how things go, and maybe just take a break for awhile. It would be good for my career. Also, I visit fluther almost exclusively during the work day. I generally don’t visit fluther much at home after work or on the weekends because I am with my kids.

@janbb: “We had talked about a NSFW tab in the past but since no development is being done…”

That would be perfect.

@tom_g: Speaking of not having a life, I just did some rough calculations. You have written an average of 4+ answers a day, since you joined (assuming that my hasty math is correct). A few jellies clock in at 40 or even 50 responses daily and rarely seem to log off or sleep. So don’t feel bad.

@tom_g Rejoice! You have a life!

@tom_g There are topics for “sex,” “sexuality,” and other sexually related terms on this site. Browsing those topics lists a host of questions with titles containing the words “porn,” “sex,” etc. If your work disallows such terms, you really shouldn’t be browsing this site at work.

tom_g's avatar

@dafox – “Topics” are just typed in by the user entering the question. Not sure how that’s relevant.

If I click on Social right now and search for “porn” and “sex” on that page, I get one hit. Same if I go to General. So, out of 70 total question titles, only 2 of them have those words. I will – and have – admit that this is a pet peeve of mine. But it’s mostly because it is completely unnecessary. Fluther can have questions with titles that are 100% safe for work, and have content that is downright filthy.

And remember, my work does not block “disallow” these terms. I’m simply playing it safe. Most (or all) companies have software that scans activity. I have no idea what my work does, but why risk it when there is no reason to. There is simply no disadvantage to having to get creative with a question’s title and slapping the [NSFW] label on it. Those who wish to view those questions can click on the question title. Those who wish to play it safe and protect their job can simply ignore them.

I’m not trying to take anything away from anyone here. I’m really just advocating for a better UI. Since this is not going to happen due to the abandonment of development, I’m asking for the fluther community to follow simple rules so that everyone can enjoy fluther. Make sense?

@tom_g “Topics” are just typed in by the user entering the question. Not sure how that’s relevant.

It’s relevant because topics allow people to easily find questions based on that subject. Obviously, if there is a topic for a certain subject, Fluther expects people to ask questions about that subject. How do you even ask questions about sex without using the word “sex”?

“If I click on Social right now and search for “porn” and “sex” on that page, I get one hit. Same if I go to General.”

Is there some other search box I’m not seeing? I just searched for “sex” and got 8,090 results of questions with sex in the title.

But not everyone can enjoy Fluther as per your suggestions. If I want to discuss sexual topics, I should be able to quickly read through titles and discern which questions are sexual. Instead of asking people to censor themselves, perhaps you should be advocating for “safe for work” functionality.

Honestly, if we are going to be expected to censor ourselves so that some people can break the rules at work, I’ll be moving on to another site. I guess I should hold off on buying the Fluther items I added to my Zazzle cart just in case.

@dafox: “How do you even ask questions about sex without using the word “sex”?”

I don’t know. Get creative. It’s possible. For reference, check out @ETPro’s Friday NSFW specials.

@dafox: “Is there some other search box I’m not seeing? I just searched for “sex” and got 8,090 results of questions with sex in the title.”

I was referring to your browser. When your browser makes a page request, the returning text from that page is the stuff your work’s IT department can filter on. So, the point of my “search” description was to show you that fluther is not a Dan Savage blog. It’s not mostly about sex, so the “you really shouldn’t be browsing this site at work” comment really is off base here. Are you with me so far?

@dafox:“But not everyone can enjoy Fluther as per your suggestions. If I want to discuss sexual topics, I should be able to quickly read through titles and discern which questions are sexual. I was trying to be nice here by assuming that English was your first language, and that you were capable of doing a Google search. If neither of those apply, I apologize. But you’d be surprised at the number of discussions here that are either….

- not about sex

or

- about sucking cock, but have a [NSFW] tag in the title

Are you seriously telling me that you cannot meet these criteria, and you consider doing so to be censorship (or self-censorship)? Really?

@dafox: “perhaps you should be advocating for “safe for work” functionality”

Christ, I know you’re new, but we’ve already described above that development has already been abandoned. There is no more functionality planned for fluther. That’s why I went out of my way to explain what I was asking.

Ignore a simple request if you can’t muster enough creativity to come up with a SFW title for your NSFW question. But remember – there are people who visit fluther who have a job. In the interest of being fair, doesn’t it make sense to accommodate in this simple way?

In all seriousness, I am rather surprised by the pushback here.

@dafox: “Honestly, if we are going to be expected to censor ourselves so that some people can break the rules at work, I’ll be moving on to another site. I guess I should hold off on buying the Fluther items I added to my Zazzle cart just in case.”

Just wanted to see that ^ again. :)

[mod says] lets keep it civil, folks.

To address the main issue, sexual terms should not ever be in the title of a question but they can be present in the description or topics, so long as you put NSFW in the title too. The reason for this is when you click on “Social” you get a list of all the current question titles but no content. That list must be “SFW”, otherwise we run into the issue that @tom_g has had today.

That way, it stays safe for people to browse the list of questions and still be able to click on the ones they know are ok for work, and the ones tagged “NSFW” can be saved for later (or read on your phone, as @Coloma suggested).

There can be no changes to the site’s functionality. No extra features, ever. We just have to work with what we’ve got now.

Please, people, use the flags and a mod will get to it as soon as possible.

janbb's avatar

@tom_g I got it now.

dafox's avatar

@tom_g If you can’t get your point across without being condescending or rude, it’s just not worth my time.

@downtide “To address the main issue, sexual terms should not ever be in the title of a question but they can be present in the description or topics, so long as you put NSFW in the title too.”

So how exactly do you ask a question about sex without saying sex? And why are there 8000+ questions with sex in the title that exist already? None of the questions on the first few pages of the results even contain the NSFW tag.

johnpowell's avatar

You use fun words like coitus and tongue-testicles. Really.. Anything works that doesn’t raise a flag for the IT people where people work.

downtide's avatar

@dafox There are many words and phrases you can use instead. Intimacy, intercourse, “adult activities”, “bumping uglies”, “getting jiggy”, “hanky panky”... etc. There are more metaphors for sex in the English language than there are for just about anything else.

Don’t forget it’s only the title of the question that matters. You can be as dirty as you like in the description, as long as you have “NSFW” in the title.

I have no idea why there are past questions that were not modded. Perhaps the rules changed. Perhaps they were never flagged and they slipped through. Perhaps workplace filters are getting stricter. In any case, once they’re gone from the first couple of pages in the main categories, it doesn’t really matter, since people rarely look at old questions. The primary issue is that someone must be able to click “Social” or “General” or “Meta” at work and be sure that the list of questions displayed on that first page is not going to lose them their job.
