If you could not eat on demand, or close to it, how would that affect your life?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) May 16th, 2014

Right now I am sure you can go eat something whenever hunger or your appetite dictates, even if you have to wait a spell to do it because you are in class, working, in surgery, etc. or don’t have any food in front of you and have to wait to make it or buy it. What if those were not the case? What if there just wasn’t any food available period, even if you had money there was no food to buy? How would that affect your life or how you lived? If food only were available only twice a week and was mainly 20lb of starches, grains, and beans, how would that affect you?

I’d be a lot hungrier.

No food means starvation, 20lbs. of starches, grains and beans a week means I’d weight 300lbs and be really gassy. haha

It’d be a major problem for me in the scenario you described. For my whole life, and particularly since having my digestive tract fiddled with, I’ve been unable to large quantities of food in a sitting. No matter how hungry I am I hit my food “limit” pretty early on in a meal. Someone like me does a lot better with smaller, more frequent meals.

I’m sure if I were in this situation I would learn to adapt by necessity, but this still wouldn’t mesh well with my needs. I imagine I’d have to stay pretty inactive most of the time to conserve energy and avoid burning precious calories. Even now with food available to me I am super underweight. :(

Food would become much more relevant. I imagine I’d spend a lot of time dreaming of the next meal, focused on finding food…and not giving much thought to anything else.

That would be miserable for those of us who have been used to having food readily available. But I think a person would adjust. Twenty pounds of rice and beans a week could be enough to stay alive, although you might get rickets or something from lack of meat, fruits and vegetables. If this actually happened, no living thing around my house would be safe. I would be cooking “dog surprise” or “robin and dumplings”.

It could possibly make me sick being that I’m a diabetic and I have a strictly controlled diet and a specific eating schedule.

Once, back in college my college daze, a girlfriend of mine mentioned how poverty looks really good on me.
I would be a lot thinner and would need a new wardrobe.

No more snack?

No! I can’t live without snack!

I’d become really resourceful. Going around asking everyone I can think of to do odd jobs for cash; making knicknacks and doodads and selling them; foraging for extra food in nature; picking up a restaurant job if one is available, because you get a free shift meal; watching people’s kids in exchange for money or food; helping people with groceries, luggage, or directions and then shamelessly asking for tips; drawing caricatures; looking for loose change on the ground. There are about a million things to try.

Uh, well, I believe I’d be a bit hungry. And cranky.
