Do you think children's cartoons need more death?

Asked by ragingloli (51967points) April 1st, 2015

In Anime, it is not uncommon for characters, (extras, side characters, even main characters) to be killed, often times in a graphic manner.
Do you think western cartoons need to man up and show more death, the inescapable conclusion of violence?
Do you think that the sanitised, bloodless, and deathless violence in children’s programming is programming human cubs with a warped version of reality?

Like when Jerry beat seven types of crap outta Tom & in the next scene…no trace.
I’d be very happy if Jerry died a horrible death, can’t stand the smug fucker.

I don’t think it’s necessary, not in the context by which you’re going here. It isn’t a cartoon’s job to teach kids about the real world. Any parent who leaves that job to cartoons ain’t fit. Not that I’m against more violence. Cartoon death is always awesome.
Also I don’t see how anime does a better job than Western cartoons at offering a better depiction of real life. In fact anime would be the last thing on that list. I don’t think I have to explain why.
Mind you, I can’t defend Bugs Bunny in that respect, either. But as I say, if I’m understanding this here, you imply that cartoons should have some kind of significant factor when it comes to telling kids what shit is like, and I disagree that such a thing should be delegated to entertainment.

@ucme Haha yeah, I myself would love to see Tweety Bird get his. I fuckin hate that bitch.

Fred from Scooby Doo, kill that prick twice.

Haven’t you ever seen a disney movie? Parents almost always bite it.
Not to say that those are the best depictions of death. Just that it’s pretty common.

The pain they leave behind is more realistic than the gore you see in anime. Not sure what real-life relevance you get from being mauled to death by some bizarre multi-tentacled creature?

Most of the death I’ve experienced so far in my life hasn’t involved large quantities of blood.

I think they have enough.

@fluthernutter
Disney movies are emotionally empty.

What? You didn’t cry during Bambi?
Oh wait. Forgot who I was talking to. :P

On a more serious note, how do you think the violence in anime relates to how people usually experience death in real life?

Sinderella
101 Executions
Alice in Murderland

The opposite of Disney != more cartoons. It’s the unplugging of the television.

I don’t think they really need graphic deaths, but touching on the subject of death and how to deal with it would be beneficial, I think.

What I need fron cartoons are more mature subjects so that cartoons can be something for more people to enjoy, and mature subjects don’t necessary have to include death.

There is more emotional force in this scene than in all disney movies combined.
