Does vitamin D from the sun work immediately?

My friend and I have heard different things about Vitamin D. I heard that for it to work from the sun, it takes a few days and you can’t shower during that time….sort of. My friend suggests that if you are in the sun, you get the benefits from D3 on your skin relatively quickly. Which is correct?

While I haven’t found a timeline yet, I’m pretty sure that showering would have no effect.

I think showering would have no affect. It might take a bit to take affect but it’s worth the effort.

Showers help the D be absorbed, I’m pretty sure.

I don’t see how showering would affect vitamin D production and absorption? It’s UVB rays from the sun that give you the D. If you get tan you get D. Your body does start converting D rather quickly from the sun. However, my personal experience is the recommendations of 15 minutes being enough to get plenty of D was not my experience when I tested it out. @syz posted a link about 30 mintes a couple of times a week. I am burnt in 30 minutes.

My experience is I don’t feel the effects of D until my blood D level is above 30. If I’m not tanning and not takin supplements my D quickly drops to around 20, so for me to start seeing a difference it takes a few weeks of me high dosing D, whether it be weeks in the sun or lots and lots of D from pills.

Basically, what I am saying is it depends on where your D levels are currently, and what your symptoms are from being deficient. If you haven’t had your blood tested, do it next time you find yourself at the doctor.

Think about it like this, if you take a baby aspirin it won’t get rid of your fever, because even though that drug impacts fevers, the level of drug from a baby aspirin in an adult isn’t sufficient to make a change in temperature.

A big regret of mine is tanning so much when I was a teen, and I had several bad burns during my youth too. I wish I had been more moderate then, so I would feel comfortable being in the sun now. I already have quite a few wrinkles from sun damage, and I wouldn’t want skin cancer. I do feel my best when I am getting lots of sun and taking D supplements in addition. However, it takes so much sun that it isn’t worth the risk on a regular basis. My D level drops like a rock very fast without sun and supplements. That’s for me personally, at my age, with my history, after I have tested out various combinations.
