Where can I find miso?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) July 28th, 2015

I was trying to make a soup, using miso and I don’t find it around here. And what exactly is it? I like to try new things.

Here tells what it is and how to make it.
Apparently you can find it in a health food store but not in the usual grocery store.

Thanks so much. I’ll look next time I’m in the organic store.

Or if you have an Asian grocery nearby like Uwajimaya.

Out here, in Southern California, you can buy miso at just about any regular grocery store, even Trader Joe’s carries it (and Whole Food, but it’s way more expensive there) but Asian markets, which abound, will always have it, and have lots of different brands, and it’s super cheap. It lasts almost indefinitely, so even if you get a tub of it, which is usually about the size of a tub of margarine, you can use it all year long and it will be fine. You keep it in the fridge.

It’s basically fermented soybean paste. It has a salty, nutty, umami flavor. In addition to being used as a base for miso soup, it’s also used as a flavoring agent for other Asian-style foods.

Here are a few recipes using miso:

Miso Glazed Salmon

Broiled Tofu with Miso Glaze and Asparagus

Mushrooms in Miso Sauce with Udon Noodles

Coconut Curry with Miso Gravy

Vegetarian Miso Ramen with Roasted Sweet Potatoes, Egg, and Sesame Broccolini

Coriander Chicken Thighs with Miso Glazed Root Vegetables

Miso Ginger Salad Dressing

Do a Google seach for “Asian market” in the city nearest you, @Adirondackwannabe.

I’m going to get me some, too.

You can come here and try too ~ I know a restaurant right in my city that sells miso soup. It consists of tofu, a little seaweed, and some seasoning I still don’t know what it is (maybe it’s from Japan). It tastes a bit salty, but really delicious.

@ibstubro and @Adirondackwannabe Once you guys get your miso, you’ll have to let us know what you made and how you liked it.

@Adirondackwannabe Sorry, it was just an example. There are Asian markets around most everywhere these days.

Almost any Asian market will have it. Around here 99 Ranch is the best Asian supermarket. Miso paste is available in the refrigerated section.

Dang. I knew I forgot something on my recent trip to the city.

I found my miso. It’s not cheap, but I’m going to make some homemade ramen noodles when it cools off. Thanks for all your answer. I’ll let you know how it turns out.

@Adirondackwannabe What a bummer that you didn’t get miso for a good price. It’s super cheap out here.

I hope you love it as much as I do.

It’s boiling hot out here, so just in case you have to wait awhile for it to cool down in your neck of the woods, you can make a Miso Salad Dressing. Of course you can use it on salad, but it’s also good on cold soba, somen or spaghetti noodles, or salmon, or just plain rice.

@Kardamom I found it in two small organic health food stores. Their prices are always kind of steep. If I want them to stay around I have to allow for that. I’ll look next time I’m in one our bigger markets. Thanks for the ideas.
