The UK’s parliamentary system is no more dysfunctional than any other parliamentary system.

It’s semi-democratic in that people vote and their leaders are chosen roughly in proportion to their votes. In that respect, it’s probably better than the US, where a person with 50.1% of the vote has a lot more power than he should.

The UK system is better than a dictatorship. It’s probably better than anarchy.

But any country that has a queen is an anachronism. No country is truly free if it has a monarchy with special privileges.

@elbanditoroso Or an oligarchy with special privileges.

undemocratic as compared to what? I mean what’s your “ideal” as a democratic political system?

elbanditoroso's avatar

@janbb agreed, but his question was about the UK

Not really. I think there is corruption in local and central government but the U.K. Is highly regulated so people get caught and punished. Also the elections are fair. Proportional representation would be good but not many countries in the world have that. I’m interested to know what you think and what prompted you to ask the question

We are all subjects of the Queen and neither she nor any of the members of the royal family were ever elected. Similarly no one in the House of Lords was ever elected either. It is a feudal system with democratic elements grafted on.

I was going to mention the House of Lords. Not democratic there.

I am against this question because it is too vague and I don’t particularly care for the font.
Is that what you were looking for?

Europe loves their royalty. When Norway was made a country in the early 1900’s they imported a monarch from the Danes. The Danes ruled Norway for 400 years after the Black death killed everyone. The Norwegian’s called it “The 400 Years of Darkness”. Gotta wonder how much they wanted a royal family, eh?

Ah, good point @cazzie. I forgot about them. It is very undemocratic – the elected government puts forward Bills to change the law and the unelected House of Lords rejects them. I think that the HoL is supposed to suggest amendments and correct vagueness and inconsistency etc but I can see that it could be open to abuse.

The US Senate was based on The House of Lords.

Can’t edit…. sorry. The House of Representatives was based on the House of Commons. ( both considered The Lower House)
