Why do SOME companies immediately begin spamming your inbox after you've placed your order? Don't they realize it costs them to lose your future business?

Asked by Buttonstc (27605points) January 12th, 2016

I’m not referring to one email for the order confirmation, of course. I’m talking about hardcore “you’ll miss the deal of the century” sales pitches for more stuff. It’s ridiculous.

There are legitimate companies I’ve been doing business with for years who don’t do this nonsense and they’ve earned my loyalty and trust precisely because they don’t resort to this type of desperation.

And of course, the spammers omit a convenient “unsubscribe” link as well. Stupid. Actually beyond stupid.

That necessitates me finding a phone number on the paperwork accompanying my order when it finally arrives and staying on the phone long enough to get transferred to a supervisor to finally put an end to this nonsense.

After all that, how likely is it that I will ever place an order with that company again lest I have to go through the same aggravation yet again? Because apparently that is how their system is set up; to assume opt-in to spam simply by placing an order.

It’s almost as if they’re purposely trying to alienate you for life and insuring you’ll never do business with them ever again.

Naturally, I’m always on the lookout to UNCHECK any of those little boxes some try to sneak past you requesting future emails. But interestingly, the more reputable (and longstanding ) a company has been on the Web the less likely they are to resort to even that. They just present the boxes as options and let you decide for yourself.

To me that indicates a basic respect for their customers by not aggravating them unnecessarily.

I’ve been ordering for years from companies like woot.com and newegg.com and have never once had to endure shady marketing techniques. The only email I’ve ever gotten from them has been ONE order confirmation. And that ensures that I will definitely order from them again. And I have; multiple times, in fact.

So why can’t more of these smaller and more desperate outfits follow the example of the big boys with the smarts who don’t annoy their customers?

Don’t these desperate ones realize that it’s costing them future business and ensuring that they will stay small and desperate?

I honestly can’t fathom why they would do this. It makes absolutely no sense to me to annoy people to death simply for having the poor judgement to place an order with them to begin with. What kind of customer service is that?

It’s been my experience that the ‘spam your inbox’ companies have embedded an “opt out of future emails” somewhere in the ordering process. It’s inconspicuous because they want you to miss it.

It’s like when you get a free download and unless you select “Custom install” it automatically includes another toolbar or the like.

In the fine print at the bottom of your spam mail there should be an ‘opt-out’ option. Don’t expect it to be obvious or necessarily easy, but if you look and persist it should be there.

Good luck!

Yes, it pisses me off, and it just happened earlier this week. They lost me as a customer.

Believe me, I thoroughly checked it with a fine tooth comb for an unsubscribe link since it would save me at least a half hour phone time. It was NOT there.

And the young lady to whom I eventually spoke admitted so but she didn’t know why. Obviously people above her pay grade made that decision. And they are monumentally stupid for that.

About a year ago when dealing with a similar situation at another company, the person whom I finally reached claimed to be the owner (not sure I believe her)

She tried to feed me a line of bs that since I had initiated contact with them (by placing an order) that they were legally permitted to correspond with me. Therefore it wasn’t spam.

After making a clear cut differentiation between an order-confirmation email and twice daily sales pitches, I told her that this spam needed to stop or I woukd never place another order with her company again. Furthermore I woukd send an email to my entire contact list warning them away from her spam farm site.

Reluctantly she agreed to stop it (as if she were granting me a huge favor) and I have never ordered from them again.

This in spite of the fact that they have some absolutely rock bottom sale prices on good quality stuff. A few times there was something that I found tempting but the aggravation of what I would have to go through again just wasn’t worth it.

She was such an arrogant and unpleasant person to deal with
and I knew full well that she had not placed a block on mailings following future orders as she said she would.

This is the craziest way of doing business I’ve ever encountered. The old days of “the customer is always right” have changed to “the customer has NO rights.”

I marvel about this too. They always ask if you want emails from them. I always say no. I always get them anyway.

I don’t know. I just answered one thing and then started getting spammed from like six or more different web sites. I had to unsubscribe to each of them. It was a hassle.

I don’t know, but I guess it has the same reason as this: one day I entered a shop and bought something. I had no feeling for the shop, it’s just that I needed that thing and the shop just happened to have it. As soon as I finished paying at the cashier the assistant put my thing inside a bag, along with several papers that promoted all kind of discounts and special offers the shop had. I was about to leave when the assistant stopped me and spent some more 5 minutes to introduce some other discounts and special offers. I just wanted to run away.

I think that’s right about if you initiate contact, they can bombard you endlessly, @Buttonstc.

I know you’re right that it’s poor business to do so, and costs them in the long run. Reputable businesses will give you the option of opting out of emails without severing contact. That makes it convenient for you to place another order.

I don’t think they can legally bombard you endlessly. If I’m not mistaken, it does give them the right to correspond with you regardig that order.

They can’t keep soliciting you if you make it ckear you don’t want it. I know I heard or read that somewhere. I’ll see if I can dig it up.

I do business with plenty of companies (in addition to the two I mentioned above) and they don’t resort to this schlock.

I mean I understand why spammers in general do it. If they get even less than a 1% response that’s still good. So they’re trolling for new customers.

But if a company ALREADY has you as a customer, why would they abuse that relationship and risk aggravating you so much that you’ll never order again? That is so incredibly stupid.
