Flash Gordon > Barbarella?

Asked by Lovelocke (1609points) July 30th, 2008

Similar sci-fi films of “the era”... both have a reputation for being laughably bad, but it seems I got far more enjoyment out of Flash Gordon compared to Barbarella. Flash Gordon attempted to take itself seriously, but through shallow acting and a truly epic soundtrack by Queen, I’d call it a much more enjoyable experience.

Barbarella starts by ripping off of Kubrick’s 2001 “special effects reels”, combines it with crapola and inappropriate music that sounds like a mix between James Bond tunes Las Vegas show tunes that never really capture the mood. “Barbarella Psychadella”... really?

Try youtube for that, maybe someone has some clips from both.

I like “bad” sci fi movies, but it seems the amount of hype Barbarella got kinda made it underwhelming by the time I got around to it. I will admit, both movies are way more fun when viewed in groups.

Similar to Death Race 2000 (of which this year’s “Death Race” is VERY loosely based on)... you have to see it to believe it.

I kind of liked both of them for different reasons. If forced to choose, I would go with Flash all the way.

Barbarella had great hair and outfits, you must admit.

edit: Just have to mention how Kubrik’s 2001:... is the most frightening movie I’ve ever seen. I love it.

There was one scene where she was attempting to avoid contact with Duran Duran by taking a hit off of the man-bong. Then she acted surprised they spotted her. I said “Damn! Her cunning plot to hide by LAYING DOWN didn’t work!”

Flash Gordon took itself seriously?
LOL

I say it did since it was based on a large body of existing work, the comics and the pre-existing serialized television show. Barbarella didn’t really have… lineage to it, I suppose.

Lineage. I like that. Didn’t see nor care to see either movie but I love to see what lovelocke writes.
