How would you get a really firm, 2 handed grip on a piece of waxed dental floss?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) August 6th, 2016

I’m once again trying to separate 2 pieced of smooth glass that were joined by a thin film of clear silicone.

I made progress with dental floss, but I can’t get a really good grip on it with both hands. I think I stand a better chance of cutting my fingers than I do at making it through the silicone at this point.

Suggestions?

tie each end to a stick.

Use a hack saw. Remove the blade and tie off floss on one end. Use the tensioner to tension the floss on the other. You could also use some thin bailing wire.

I use an extra long piece and wrap it around my fingers for the tension.

Yeah, wrap it around your fingers. Put tape around your fingers so the floss won’t cut them. Also, it frays pretty quick. If you have a long enough piece just unwrap from your fingers, slide a new section down, repeat. Were you in Alcatraz at some point?

@ Tape? haha Okay, what about a blindfold and standing on one foot too. lol

Hack saw is genius. Pure genius, @ARE_you_kidding_me.
Not that that takes anything away from anyone else’s GA.

I have several pair of the cotton gloves with the grippy dots on them. I shall tryeth them anon, on the morrow morn.

I would have a difficult time tying enough knots in the floss that it would not slip out, @ragingloli.

I’m afraid the floss will cut through my fingers faster than the silicone, @Coloma.

Most things that I would put on my fingers to protect them would only reduce the friction on the floss, @Dutchess_III. Alcatraz?

Yeah. Double post. Deal with it. I answered then thought it rude not to respond to the other GAs and I wasn’t going to try to type in user names when another answer box would auto-fill.

Hope someone’s answer helps me do a better job of just flossing my teeth!!! After all the years I’ve been doing it I still haven’t quite figured out how to grip the damned string.

WRAP IT AROUND YOUR FINGERS @Pachy! Just a couple of loops..

Wrap it around your fingers. I agree with her^^. Most people are too stingy with floss. You need a fairly long piece, wrap it around your forefingers. You can use other fingers to help brace it as you floss or whatever you do with it.

Right, then slide it down to get a fresh part.

I was reading a news story that dental floss has poor evidence to say it is any good at getting rid of the bacteria between your teeth. Interdental brushing is what dentists are recommending.

How does one brush between ones teeth?

ibstubro's avatar

I have a question out there about flossing, @Stinley.
Go add your 2ยข there.

Sorry! I’ve been on holiday…

I have an idea about the silicone. Can you combine the flossing with a silicone solvent (that you might use to remove sealer from round a bath, for example)?

Dutchess_III's avatar

I could not get any of those between my teeth @Stinley! It’s a stretch to get dental floss in between my teeth.

I also have a feeling that “waxed” tooth floss pretty much defeats the purpose.

@Dutchess_III Buy Glide dental floss for when you need it. There are extreme differences between dental floss. The good stuff cannot be compared in ease of use and comfort.
