How is the Rio Olympics helping the dirt poor people of Brazil?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) August 8th, 2016

All that money spent on new, impressive Olympic venues for competition bring in all that foreign money, but how is that helping the dirt poor people in the slums who cannot even afford to buy a program at the Games? What are they going to do with those venues after two weeks when the ”Big Show” folds its tent and blows to another shore four years from now?

They aren’t. I really do not believe they will make the slightest difference to the poor of Brazil.

Did the games ever make a difference on poverty in other countries where they were organized, eg in the US? It’s not what they are meant to do.

Well, some people have been helpfully removed from their homes and given the… uh… opportunity to find other housing?

Seek's avatar

They’re also being helpfully reminded that the police are in charge.

Yeah. The poor, as in most cases, do not benefit from the games. Poor criminals probably have an uptick in business, and I’ve read articles in the past of sex trafficking and prostitution doing well.

The games can boost the economy and image of the host city. And add to the prestige of the world’s more powerful and richer countries. But the poor still suffer.

The USA has the means to help it’s poor. It doesn’t have to rely on the Olympics to raise money to help them. The people in charge don’t care about the poor. They see them as lazy or stupid. And therefore not as important as say, a missile defense system in South Korea.

Nothing ever helps the poor!

Death, is the only thing that helps the poor…

Was it supposed to? Was one of the Olympic goals “to help the poor”? I doubt it.

Seek's avatar

Well, @elbanditoroso – one of the big reasons people use to support the Olympics – and really, any overblown, expensive sporting event – as an institution is that it “helps the local economy”.

It’s beyond time to retire that excuse.

When it comes to any really big scam, whatever victims are intended, you can rest assured that one way or another, the poor will be screwed.

@Seek

Indeed. Classic sports team owner’s demand: “Yes, the taxpayers are paying for a new arena they don’t want, for a team who’s games they don’t attend, but it’ll be an economic boon! A couple of dozen minimum wage peons will have employment 8 days out of the year!”

I think some of you are being a bit shortsighted here. A temendous number of jobs are created in building the stadiums for the Olympics as well as well as service jobs for all the attendees. Small Businesses and large all benefit. A tremendous effort has gone into cleaning up the water, the environment, and the streets. The massive influx of tourists will have a lingering impact on the tourist trade as well. A cleaner environment, massive influx of jobs, and a massive influx of money to Brazil. Remember that they have been preparing for this for 8 years. I would think all this is right in the sweet spot for most Democrats.

All well and good for the businesses and the tourists. Does nothing to help the poor, as the question asked.

Many poor residents have their homes razed, been subjected to police violence, etc. They are not benefiting from this, at all.

Ahh, nowt like ye olden times when the poor would participate by being eaten by lions
Are you not entertained?

Seek's avatar

Eaten by lions, tear gassed by pigs. Whatever.

The poor should rally around & do what they do best, star in a jolly, feel good musical
