Is a GoPro worth it?

Asked by Sunshinegirl11 (1110points) May 24th, 2017 from iPhone

Hello everyone!
I am interested to know if buying a GoPro would be worth it. I’m going on a cruise in a month or so which will consist of a lot of water activities. These include snorkeling, kayaking, etc.
I currently have a canon t3i which I love! I use it a lot but mostly for landscape and family photos. During this cruise, I obviously can’t take that camera underwater so I was thinking of buying a GoPro but the one I want is a bit pricey and I don’t want to waste money. I’ve been researching stuff about it for a little over 2 months now!!
I take a lot of pictures during my trips and I try to go on a vacation every summer.
What do you all think?

Yeah, It’d be pretty cool. Seems like it’s an easy way to take pictures/videos and not have to hold a camera and click things all the time.
Underwater photos would be amazing and a great memory, in my opinion. It’s hard to take photos like that, so I’d suggest doing that if you have the means.

Yes! I love them. I own 4 (Two Gopro 4’s and and one Gopro 5 and one Gopro Sessions 5)

I’ve has a lot of fun with them.

Check out this video that I made of my canoe race from last Saturday (5–20-17).

I had one for years, if you’re active in watersports or things like cycling then it is.

I am very happy with my Hero 4 Silver. The convenience is fantastic – great for travel. If I was buying today, I would buy the same one from the Refurbished store.

They do work well. My husband uses one for racing.

If you think you’ll use it for other things besides the cruisevtgen I think splurge. If it’s a one time thing then maybe a cheaper alternative.

I have a Sony DSC-TX30 that I use on cruises. It is waterproof, shock proof, 18.2 MP (mine is older with a few less mp) has both camera and movie functions, It is small and lightweight, a little taller and wider than a GoPro but only ⅓ the depth and as such has a larger view screen. It does not require a special waterproof case and takes great pics. It does not have all the little GoPro brackets/mounts/headbands etc. but then again I prefer the hand held when shooting under water. I have used it on several cruises. I usually carry it as a backup to my Olympus but find that I am usually pulling it out more often because of its small size and ease of use.

FWIW I have borrowed and used a GoPro in the past and also own an AEE Magicam very similar in size and function to the GoPro. I bought to use when snorkeling on cruises . I tried it and went back to my Sony. I think it (the Sony) takes sharper video and I usually pull stills from my videos after a vacation..

But, that being said, I have made some great footage on the ski slopes but most people don’t want to see that much video IMO.

PS Great footage @gondwanalon.
