Seventh Day Adventists: Are they societally to the right or left of the spectrum?

Asked by Yellowdog (12216points) July 22nd, 2017

They seem to be very multicultural and in all parts of the city where I live, and have some very progressive thinkers in their past, involving health and nutrition, mental health, etc. I suppose some of their vegetarian emphasis might be considered pseudo-science, however. The ones I know seem to be very politically conservative and biblically strict almost to the point of fundamentalism and separatism, though they welcome everyone they seem to stay to themselves, their methods and ways as a group. The entire concept of Sabbaticalism seems to imply keeping the Hebrew Sabbath, conserving God’s creation and resources.

If you belong to the Seventh Day Adventists or are familiar with them, how would you describe the societal mindset in terms of left/right, liberal/conservative

Its okay to answer if you don’t like this group, also—or have had negative experiences, as is often the way when dealing with separatist groups. Some have told me that they are very legalistic and have very clear rules.

Perhaps you might consider bifurcation religion and politics. At the base beliefs, they are neither right nor left.

I spent a good chunk of my youth in Redlands, CA but my grandma worked in Loma Linda and as a result I spent a lot of time with Seventh Day Adventists. It is so hardcore the USPS delivered mail on Sunday but not on Saturday.

From what I gathered most held “conservative views” with regards to things like abortion and same sex marriage. But most were down with higher taxes to expand the social safety net.

I would like to add that I went to many Seventh Day Adventists BBQs where I was looking for a cheeseburger and walked away with grilled asparagus. Even at 15 I was a solid agnostic and they knew it. I don’t recall any attempt to convert me.

As a religion I consider them better than most.

Their beliefs about Christ are in line with mainline Christians—they put the Bible above all faith and practice but have some extraneous beliefs of their own. You might hear of a Baptist church and a Church of the Nazarene doing something together, or a Methodist and Presbyterian— or an Episcopal, Catholic and Lutheran — but the Adventists are one of those groups that stays to themselves, as do the Churches of Christ and some other groups.

Paradoxically, to me they seem enlightened yet not very broad minded.

I used to work with a man who was a 7th Day Adventist. We went out in the field a lot for our job. He was a Jamaican man, very respectful and respected by others at work. I can tell you he’d never talk religion, never push his religion on me, only would talk politics if you brought it up. I do know he left work early on Fridays in the winter so he could be home by sundown.
