Is it bad to support two sports teams at the same time?

Asked by RyanS123 (75points) May 5th, 2018 from iPhone

I live in the New York Islands and despite the amount of teams nearby me, I’ve never really gotten into sports until a few months ago. I was never really exposed to sports when I was younger for two main reasons: The only member on my mom’s side of my family that watches sports is my grandfather and my father grew up in central New York and is a Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres fan, two teams that only play near me and are on our TVs a few times a year. For the longest time, I’ve seen myself as a Giants/Yankees/Rangers/Knicks fan, but as I said before, I was never really into sports until now. What got me into sports was back in February, when my brother, who’s an Islanders fan, convinced my dad to bring him to an Islanders game. Since the game was during winter break and I knew I’d probably have nothing better to do, I told my dad that he could buy a ticket for me, too. I ended up loving it and definitely want to go to another one.

While I did have a good experience at the game, part of me still supports the Rangers. Last night while I was out, I ran into a friend of mine’s brother. We talked for a few minutes and I asked him why his brother wasn’t where we were. He said he was at a Yankees game, and I told him that I was also a Yankees fan. Then he proceeded to tell me that he didn’t go with his brother because he was a Mets fan. I asked him how he felt about his brother supporting a rival of his favorite team. Then he told me that his brother his actually for both the Yankees and the Mets, describing him as a half-Yankees half-Mets fan. That was when I started to think that maybe I could be a fan of both the Islanders and the Rangers. What do you think? Would some people see me as a confused bandwagon fan and/or not a true fan?

This is a lovely microcosm of why politics are such shit.

I generally hate sports and the people that obsess over them.

Root for the team you enjoy watching. There can multiples. If you root solely on geography you are a sheep.

You can like, watch and support as many teams as you want. Anyone why says otherwise has probably fried their brain from excessive alcohol consumption.

Some people get extremely weird about sports, and some even get angry in their fan loyalty.

I’m not a great sports fan, but I have in the past liked a few teams, and disliked others. My jerkishness peaked at about age 7, and then mostly went away, though I still tend to dislike “all American” style football teams (Cowboys & Patriots) that are too good/cocky and have fans who seem to tie up their fandom with their brand of patriotism somehow, or to attract fans whom I don’t like. I have often liked a few teams at once, and the only “issue” is slight mixed feelings about whom to root for when they play each other. That’s about it. There doesn’t have to be an issue about it unless someone’s being extreme/nutty about it.

Strangely, there are many people who get extremely nutty about sports, even fighting other at soccer matches , beheading a referee on the field… (well, the ref had killed one of the players…)

How could it possibly be “bad”? Why would it even matter? Watch what you want.

I’m a diehard Raiders fan. I support the team rain, or shine. I love the NFL though too. I often like other teams because of certain players that I’m a fan of.

Rivalry can also make sports more entertaining. I despise the Patriots. I root for every team they play that day. I enjoy watching Brady get beat up. I don’t wish for him to be injured, just in pain. In any story, a great villain makes the plot better. Having someone to root against, can deepen the sports experience.

Being part of a fan base links you to other fans. It also makes you an enemy to other fan bases sometimes. If you are wearing some of your teams gear, I recommend you be willing to have heated discussions with other fans, and fans of different teams. It’s usually all in good fun, but knowing your team, and the sport can help you debate with the most hardcore fans.

I think sports are great, and can be a healthy distraction from life.

I have NBA, college teams, NHL, and love parts of the Olympics. I love boxing, MMA, and most competitive sports. In the end, it’s up to each person what type of fan they are. Just enjoy it.
