She really is an idiot. The reboot of her show was incredibly successful and she threw it all away with a moronic tweet about someone no one was even talking about in the first place. Maybe she’ll finally learn that there are consequences for saying stupid racist shit, but I don’t picture her having much of a career after this.

elbanditoroso's avatar

One can only hope. Maybe the Fox channel will pick up her show.

SergeantQueen's avatar

what did she tweet?

canidmajor's avatar

@SergeantQueen a google search should turn up 8 bazillion references. It was gross and deeply racist.

SergeantQueen's avatar

Wow. The president even congratulated her on her show getting so popular.
I remember watching reruns of Roseanne on Nick @ nite When I was really young.

It’s a shame she’s so stupid now.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

The end of her sitcom career, yes.

She’ll have to settle for a Fox News position or maybe a White House job.

notnotnotnot's avatar

C’mon, it was just the Ambien. ~

elbanditoroso's avatar

Interesting article link basically saying that the Right Wing beat down the NFL players last week, and the left wing beat down Roseanne yesterday. So now the culture wars are even.

I disagree, but it’s an interesting take on the matter.

notnotnotnot's avatar

@elbanditoroso – Reason magazine is Libertarian (free market capitalist). Their concerns only focus on this.

This article is a “both sides” argument with a lot of words.

“This race to find more things to be offended about and more reasons to start lynch mobs doesn’t seem particularly healthy for the fabric of American society, especially if right and left are determined to one-up each other on the outrage front.”

Fuck off. To frame this as just people finding “more things to be offended about” is a just an expression of conservatism and white privilege. And “lynch mob” is their term for calls for social justice.

As with all Libertarian takes, they use a lot of words to say nothing.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Will see her in a White House role, maybe tweeting for the President?

chyna's avatar

I think this is probably the end of her career. What she did was stupid and unforgivable. But she apologized and that should have been it, because nothing she could say would save her.
But she can’t keep her mouth shut. She’s blaming ambien taken on Memorial Day, she’s mad at her cast mates for bailing on her, and now they have cancelled her syndicated reruns. She has effectively taken money away from those cast mates she is mad at.
I think she may need some therapy and a medicine change.

Demosthenes's avatar

@elbanditoroso I guess the problem with that angle is that it posits that kneeling at a football game and comparing black people to apes are morally equivalent. Maybe some people believe they are equally offensive; I don’t. I agree that the reactions are similar, as are the defenses (saying the NFL has a right to punish kneeling players, but calling for a boycott of ABC because they violated Roseanne’s freedom of speech). I at least try not to be a hypocrite about it. Both “employers” had a right to do what they did.

janbb's avatar

She’s been a bigot and a racist for years. It’s time she was called on it. Like @chyna I feel badly for her co-workers but I’m glad the show was canceled promptly. I hope this is the end of her career although I did enjoy the old show.

Patty_Melt's avatar

She has been a thief for years.
I have friends in Ottumwa, which is where Tom Arnold is from.
They said she and Tommy would just show up at a biker bar and hang. They made some Elvis movie there, and begged for Elvis “stuff” to use in the movie. When the shooting was over they closed up the truck and left, and people never saw their stuff again.
Also, they bought a house down the road from Ottumwa, and broke up before it was finished. Both of them were fined for leaving the work undone.

She is a comedian, We usually applaud and reward them when they make jokes that are right on the edge without crossing said edge. It used to be that they just did not make people laugh when it went a smidge too far, now people get pissy, offended and demand some sort of retribution. It’s not right. That kind of walking the edge was her shtick and has been for years.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I tried Ambien for a few days. I ended up peeing in my bed. (I was dreaming that I was in the bathroom at Granny’s house.)

Well. Roseanne shit the bed…

I agree that comedians should be given a lot of slack. I do think that this isn’t an isolated incident though. She repeatedly crossed the line. And honestly, her statements don’t feel like jokes. They feel like racist, hateful declarations. I think Wanda Sykes felt this was the last straw. I heard that advertisers were already considering pulling out. This is what I would call political suicide.

zenvelo's avatar

Story tonight that former Trump aide Michael Caputo wants to sign her to put her show on a new streaming service.

kritiper's avatar

I think she’s had it.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Wouldn’t shock me, if she got a show on The NRA network…

Patty_Melt's avatar

I finally found a quote.
It is mean, but I wouldon’t call it racist.
Good grief, all the time are jokes like that done on TV, Jimmy Fallon does it a lot.
When Prince Charles remarried, lots of people were depicting him next a horse in a veil and tiara.
Frigging move on folks.

canidmajor's avatar

@Patty_Melt, how is ”Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj” not racist?

notnotnotnot's avatar

@Patty_Melt: “Frigging move on folks.”

If “move on” meant expand the conversation to include the larger discussion of white supremacy, BLM, private prison/slavery, economic justice, and the history (past and present) of US and its racism and Islamophobia, I would agree. But I suspect what your “move on” means” is “shut the fuck up”.

Patty_Melt's avatar

Puhleez, white supremacy?
Comedians are always putting this one with that one and so and so is the child.
All it is is saying the person looks like a strange mix, and to me, that would be a strange mix.
It has been routine comedy for a long time.
You folks are just all hot about it because Rosanne announced she was a Trump supporter.
Have you seen the show?
They have Roseanne supporting Trump, and Jackie wears a Pussy hat. Their intention is to show families divided trying to find ways to get along.
The show is far from bigoted, so even if the world views her tweet as wrong, the show itself should experience no effect.
I don’t see it as amusing, but I also don’t find it to be bigotry.

ragingloli's avatar

Not sure if you are truly ignorant of the pervasive use of apes and monkeys in traditional racist iconography targeted against black people, or if you just pretend to be ignorant.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Pretending you’re not a racist by ignoring crass and demeaning words does show your upbringing..

canidmajor's avatar

@Patty_Melt, you may not be aware of the long history of calling black people “apes” as a serious racial slur, but it would behoove you to be aware of it now. It is a thing, and grossly offensive.
I don’t care about Roseanne, I didn’t watch her back in the day, I don’t watch her now, I don’t care whom she supports.

Her tweet wasn’t offensive because we are all a bunch of liberal snowflakes, it was offensive because it was offensive.

chyna's avatar

@pattymelt The show itself may not be bigoted, I don’t know, I don’t watch it, but what Roseanne Barr said definitely was. She blamed ambien so that leads me to believe she knew what she said was racist.
And, just as an aside, who the hell is Roseanne Barr to talk about anyone’s looks? She’s no prize winner herself.

notnotnotnot's avatar

@Patty_Melt – Keep in mind that this wasn’t just some kind of joke. Don’t forget the “muslim brotherhood” part. She was expressing her Islamophobia and her conspiracy theory beliefs.

When you make an effort to publicly signal your racism, Islamophobia, and general ignorance, there is going to be a response.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^^Unless you are the POTUS.

Patty_Melt's avatar

I am aware of the apes thing. I still think that is stupid. We are all closely related to apes.
When I was a little girl everybody called me a monkey because I absolutely loved climbing.
I never thought of that as demeaning. Apes are wonderful, and I would much rather be called an ape than a chicken…
or a snowflake.
I guess going through brutal physical torture every day makes so many other things trivial to me.
I see a bunch of whiny babies upset over what?
When my ancestors met, the one branch called the other branch pale face, and in return they were called redskin.
Neither was an insult unless someone got a sore butt about it.
I’m tired of the name calling, but I’m even more tired of the whining.
Everybody should knock it off and take a nap.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^There are certain words, that are basically used as a substitute for the “N” word. “Boy,” “monkey,” and primate related words are taken as such. And if we’re being honest, I think Roseanne meant it like that.

Patty_Melt's avatar

And there it is.
You THINK you know what she meant.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I do. It’s part of a pattern. Not an anomaly…

Patty_Melt's avatar

Well I’m done on this thread.
I just think a lot of people are being excited about throwing stones.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^There’s something to be said about that too…

chyna's avatar

@pattymelt So go take a nap and relax.

notnotnotnot's avatar

Don’t forget that this country is a racist, xenophobic shithole that is led by a functioning white nationalist and a radical Republican party. Life for poc isn’t a fucking picnic. So, what you might see (from a position of privilege) as “whining” is merely a call for justice.

And if it seems that Roseanne is getting hit with disproportionate amount of pushback on this, consider that people are able to push back in areas where they can. Public outcry over social media is much easier than taking over a police department or burning down the white house. “Whining” is the conservative (in the true sense) approach here. If the “whining” doesn’t work, then watch the fuck out.

So, yes, if you’re tired of hearing your privilege called out, then sit this out. There are others that give a shit.

canidmajor's avatar

Golly, @Patty_Melt , do you think Roseanne was referring to Valerie Jarrett’s climbing abilities? Really? OK, then.

janbb's avatar

The fact is that ABC canceled the show almost immediately, not after a huge outcry. So either they thought her racism was finally over the top or they realized that the pushback would be too damaging. Since the show had been a huge commercial success for them, I’d like to believe they were actually drawing a line in the sand.

Some people didn’t “whine” loudly enough and now we have a president who can boast about grabbng women by the pussy. Two cheers for democracy!

Aster's avatar

I feel it was quite racist and that she deserves some sort of punishment for it. But to put all those other people out of work is too much. Remember Archie Bunker? He was much worse and on a daily basis, too. And The View is so obnoxious.
Yes; she deserves to be fined or something but they won’t even show her re-runs.

canidmajor's avatar

Um…Archie Bunker was a fictional character. Remember?

Darth_Algar's avatar

I am so goddamned tired of white people excusing, ignoring, glossing over or spinning racism and dictating who should or should not be offended, and by what they can or cannot be offended by. Fuck you and your priviledged, lilywhite cracker ass bullshit.

Sincerely,
A cracker ass WASP

canidmajor's avatar

And Ambien or not, I’m a little surprised that Roseanne didn’t think there would be a major, and immediate backlash from her boss. You know, the African American one.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

Eh, If she was a solo comedian than I really think people are over reacting. It’s her fucking job to be slightly offensive. The line between comically and overly offensive is so thin that I halfway believe even slightly clouded judgement could make it hard to see said line. She is being supported by a major network that does not want her to tarnish their image so they cut ties. I’m certain that she signed some sort of contract with them about this kind of thing and she was obviously not in the right frame of mind or just not insightful enough to realize she was representing more than herself. With the thin skin people have now it was the only move they could make and save face. Enough said, except people..grow some thicker skin.
I’m not a big supporter of pharma companies but the tweet the makers of Ambien responded with was genius.

si3tech's avatar

@stanleybmanly It may not be te end of her career.

NomoreY_A's avatar

She’s a washed up has been, relegated in future to a TV trivia question. Needless to say, she’s the darling of the right for now, but it wasn’t so long ago the same bunch was screaming for her blood when she screwed up singing the National Anthem trying to be funny. How soon they forget. When it’s convenient for them.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

“she’s the darling of the right for now” Ha, The Darling of Trumps right but not the right She was never forgiven for hawking that loogy

Aster's avatar

I can’t imagine that she’s finished on tv. I keep thinking she’ll pop up on a new show on a different network. Not that I ever watched.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

UPDATE: She might be killed off and the series will be called The Connors from now on.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Yeah. I heard that. She’s real sad, now… Says she “lost everything.”

I personally think that this is how such people should be treated. The obviously racist, should;be shunned, and ostracized. There really is no excuse for it, in this day , and age….
