Is John McCain responsible for Trumpism?

Asked by Stache (4934points) August 27th, 2018

Forgive me please for I have no sources. This is some bs an acquaintance of mine was spouting off today on social media.

She’s been bashing McCain for the past two days after his death shaming those who are praising him. She mentioned that McCain opened Pandora’s Box by having Sarah Palin as a running mate. According to my friend this gave the Tea Party a voice. A voice that has allowed Trumpism today.

My friend shared a source but I can’t find it on her wall. This bitch woman posts 40 times a day. I almost sprained my index finger scrolling to find her post.

Even though McCains choice of Sarah Palin for his running mate cost him my vote I still today do not believe that she was HIS choice. I believe that she was forced upon him by the Republican leadership as the cost of supporting him.
As I recall, to me it appeared that when Palin became the VP nominee McCain just gave up hope of winning the Presidential race. I remember how he went from an energetic candidate who one who appeared already defeated when campaigning. Perhaps it was his health but I think not.
That being said, he did allow his moral compass to be manipulated by others instead of being the Maverick he was known for. I don’t think he ever forgave himself for doing this and has spent the intervening years trying to make up for this mistake.
If you want a reason for Trump you need look no further than the American electorate in particular and a large swath of the American people in general. We are a shallow, self-serving, morally compromised populace. As a nation, we got the candidate we deserved even if the majority of us did not want him.

I blame Trump’s supporters. No single person.

I think McCain could have held close to the morals he claimed to adhere to. I think he should have been in constant attack mode, in regards to Trump, but he let his political leanings shape his public opinions.

I think his brain cancer shaped his public discourse of the administration. I think he had a sudden sense of empathy, that he did not have before his diagnosis. I respect his ability to see the error of his ways, and take the few stances against the Trump administration. But. He ultimately sold his soul, to the GOP. 30 pieces of silver, didn’t buy him what he expected. The supporters of the Trump administration, will follow McCain to the grave. Their type, will die out, to the advantage of humanity…

No. I’m thinking the biggest influence that created Trumpism is the election of Obama. Just like Bush coasted I’m on family values after Clinton’s meds with Monica.

This is a fairly common interpretation.

Ronald Reagan is the antecedent to Trumpism, because of the role that he played in dividing the country.

And one can argue that Barry Goldwater (1964 Rep candidate) is the true cause of today’s issues because he was an apostle of extremism for political reasons.

McCain doesn’t hold a candle to the damage that Reagan and Goldwater did.

Interesting article based on the premise that McCain tried to save the Republican Party from Itself back in 2000. Not sure I agree with it but an interesting read for those so inclined.
