What makes people want to harm children?

Asked by LadyMarissa (16091points) October 28th, 2018

This bothers me EVERY Halloween. What kind of sick, twisted mind finds a way to rationalize harming children??? My step daughter with my first husband was so paranoid that she wouldn’t eat her Halloween candy & she’d even watch me to make sure I didn’t eat it either!!! I asked her WHY she went out trick or treating IF she wasn’t going to eat her candy. She said she enjoyed dressing up & going door to door; but, she wasn’t going to take the chance of eating candy that might hurt her. She was only 6 at the time & quite wise for her years. I didn’t discourage her from her thinking. Still, to this day, I wonder HOW anyone can try to harm a child with their candy???

Children are loud, annoying, needy, often times aggressive and violent, disobedient and self absorbed, devoid of manners and etiquette.
So it is only natural to hate them.

Because they did not have a happy childhood and they want to project their bitterness onto other children just in case those children might have something they missed.

Loli, you’ve said some pathetic things in my time here; but, you just reached an all time low!!! Children are created by the adults around them. Yes, they can be loud & needy; but, given the right adult to care for them, they are quiet & loving!!!

@josie I have NEVER looked at it from that point of view. You may be right; but I find that thought deeply disturbing in itself!!!

How was your childhood?

1) The hysterical scare stories of harmful “candy” are way, way overblown. Try to find actual harm. It’s exceedingly rare.

2) Yes, some hateful dangerous freaks are out there. See the Magabomber and the synagogue shooter this week. I can’t begin to understand their motivation.

I remember my mom being a nutter tossing all our candy and giving us stuff she had bought.. Because needles and stuff. This was in 1985.

The candy caravan..

I think this is at best a grotesque exaggeration. Doesn’t most candy come wrapped anyway? Soft unwrapped candy in small and grubby hands, dropped, picked up and then eaten is probably more of a hazard.

People do not want to harm children. Harm the teenagers, maybe, but not children. This myth has little basis in fact. However, like the tampering scare that did happen, now has everything we might put in our mouth (except for some candy) is so tamper-proof that seniors like myself cannot open our vitamins (good thing I don’t need heart medications).

But because we like being shocked, rare events are news events repeated so often they seem more likely. And some humans, very few, are so demented that hearing about some crazy act sets them to considering it. So parents who have their children’s candy x-rayed before allowing it to be eaten may seem to be the crazy ones, but like the lottery, one chance in a Trillion is enough to act on the possibility.

Insanity, pure and simple. Because it isn’t logical or sane to harm children!

Mostly good responses and very little I can add.

But I think that some people are warped and really want to be evil.
Harming children, whom are often seen as pure, happy, and innocent, is the ultimate evil.

And being evil and amoral and unstoppable makes some people feel powerful and free.

Some people are very ill, and children are an easy target for them I would guess it is a form of power over.

Others are not happy unless they are bringing pain and misery to others and hurting their children is a way to go about doing that.

I somewhere agree with SQUEEKY2. Children indeed are very soft targets and such sick minded people, who even think to harm anybody, are really coward from inside to go outlandishly and take a hit with someone who might be powerful in any sense. Because then they would have equal backfiring, which won’t feed their greed

Because there are some who want to do harm on Halloween our Town has a big party at the local arena that gives safe candies and such to the kids and youth some go to the swimming pool as well..its a Fun night instead of a scary night for most.

I live in the Bible Belt & most of the churches here offer Trunk or Treat as an alternative to Trick or Treat. Most of the kids go there where their parents & they can feel safe… Plus most of it in inside where it’s nice & warm!!!
