The Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything is numeric in Douglas Adams’ series The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. In the story, a “simple answer” to The Ultimate Question is requested from the computer Deep Thought, specially built for this purpose. It takes Deep Thought 7½ million years to compute and check the answer, which turns out to be 42. Unfortunately, The Ultimate Question itself is unknown, suggesting on an allegorical level that it is more important to ask the right questions than to seek definite answers. Indefinite answers to some questions are better left that way if it is the wrong question.

42 is one of The Numbers.

4.8.15.16.23.42.

When a question is large and complex, and no one really knows the answer, people often say “42”, since from Hitchhiker’s Guide, that’s the answer to the the ultimate question, which is presumably about the meaning of life, the universe, and all that, even though that is not explicitly stated in the novel.

So, the question of how to have a good marriage: well good luck! 42!

no one really knows, or no one is certain about what to say to you, because marriage is such a problematic relationship

Good marriages, rarely involve luck—at least not in the long run….

But coming up with the answer to how to have a good marriage: that might take a bit of luck.

Oh never mind.

It’s okay, I don’t mind ;-)

Maybe it’s the 42nd song they’ve written. DMB names their songs like that. Not to be a party-pooper or anything.
