Have you heard the city of New York is on the verge of renaming Fifth avenue President Barack Obama avenue?

Asked by stanleybmanly (24153points) August 14th, 2019

Apparently it is a snide dig at Trump’s inflated view of himself. That’s a long name for a street, but it gives Trump tower a President Barack Obama street address. I hope they erect huge street signs in front of the place.

I’ve heard it. Not sure if I believe it. But I’d sure love for it to happen.

This is ABC from 2 hours ago. They have over 100,000 signatures to rename it! Can we add our names?

Funny. I doubt it will ever happen, though.

Even if it is changed, it will still be referred to as Fifth Avenue. Just like sometimes a street will be named in someone’s memory, maybe if they were born there (like Fred Astaire or something) but it will still be known as the original street name.

The city stipulated that it would consider the issue if a petition received sufficient signatures. So far the online petition has garnered better than 93,000 names . It would designate the single block between 56th & 57th streets Barack Obama Ave.

They changed Washington National Airport, America’s capital airport named for our first president, to Ronald Reagan Airport. I mean seriously! WTF?! I’m still pissed about it. It could have been a President I loved and I would be against it.

They also named the Florida Turnpike Ronald Reagan Turnpike. Why? If it was a California turnpike that would make more sense to. Or, even an airport in California.

Reagan fired something like 10,000 air traffic controllers when they were striking, I don’t remember the whole story, and he gets an airport? Our nation’s capital airport? I know I’m repeating myself.

So, it doesn’t bother so much that Reagan got the FL Turnpike, even though it doesn’t really make sense to me, and if 5th Avenue isn’t already named for someone else then I’m ok with making it Obama Ave. It will still be 5th also I assume.

It may not be a good thing to name streets etc. after people unless they are long long long dead.

I don’t know that they’re “on the verge” of renaming it. According to USA Today a petition is requesting it. As funny as I think it would be, common sense tells me that trump will NEVER allow it to happen…no matter how many hookers he has to provide to NYC officials!!!

I hear a counter petition called “Trump This” is going to plead the 5th.

The beauty of this proposition is that it is just the sort of pettiness that lies
within the fool’s range of understanding.
