I think Evita was a fantastic movie. That’s a musical, I don’t know if you are counting musicals when you say play.

Grease was great too, both as a play and a movie.

I didn’t like Chicago as a movie at all. I never saw the play though.

I found this list you might enjoy. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_plays_adapted_into_feature_films

There are many movies on that list that I have seen, but not their live counterpart.
From the ones where I have seen both I must say
*the worst Is “Annie” (the only version that came close was the 1999 Disney version)
*the best would be “Driving Miss Daisy”

I don’t think I’m qualified, since I have not seen all such films, and wouldn’t know how to rank them except subjectively., and as JLeslie mentioned, I don’t know if you mean films from musical plays as well as non-musical plays.

Of the ones I have seen, and that come to mind, the best ones in my very subjective gut reaction’s opinion, limited greatly by memory and sleepiness, include:

My Fair Lady
The Sound of Music (1965)
Hairspray (2007)

It sounds like one of the worst may be the recent Cats film, though I’m really sure I don’t know and don’t want to experience the worst musical film.

@Zaku I have not seen the movie Cats, but I saw the live version. From what I have seen of the movie, I would have to say that wins for the worst.

The worst is provably “Cats”, while the best for me is Glengarry Glenn Ross.
Mind you, the latter is the only one I have watched.

Thanks jellies! I’ve seen both Phantom of the Opera musical and Schumacher’s film and appreciated both. I prefer experiencing it ( every 3 years ) performed live but not possible so the movie would have to do.

A friend once told me the film One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest in her opinion never lived up to the greatness of the play she saw.

The movie of the play The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas was horribly miscast. And the movie was awful.

Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton?

Sleuth is the best.
I have no worst.

Cats was not only a horrible movie, it is based on an absolutely horrible musical. When I saw it on Broadway, the only reason I was there at the end was because my date refused to leave.

A whole musical based on a single horrible earworm of a song.

There are so many outstanding movies made out of musicals and plays it is hard to choose the best. West Side Story; Glengarry Glen Ross, both were outstanding.

My Fair Lady is the best. Annie is the worst.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers

Oh, I forgot to mention. I have seen both the live show and movie of “A Chorus Line”. The movie is absolutely abysmal.

^^Only saw the film. I think I’m inclined to take your word for it.
