Why is it, that in some live-action performances of "Peter Pan", a female is chosen to play the male/lead character?

Asked by JackAdams (6574points) September 3rd, 2008

There have been male actors in the role, of course, such as Robin Williams and Jeremy Sumpter, but in what appears to be the majority of cases, casting directors seem to prefer females as the Peter Pan character, selecting either a young girl, or a petite woman for that role.

When that is done, you’ll notice that Peter and Wendy never kiss, because of the so-called “lesbian connotations” such a scene might suggest to audiences.

Are the females selected, chosen for their more “graceful-looking” flying abilities (athletics), or because they can provide a much better (if needed) singing voice?

What’s your guess?

It’s because the female form and voice more closely mimics that of a young boy.

Can’t say I’ve ever heard anyone mention anything about lesbian connotations before.

Watch the version of Peter Pan with Mary Martin, paying particular attention to this dialogue:

Peter: “You must never touch me.”

Wendy: “Why not?”

Peter: “I don’t know. You just can’t.” [paraphrased from memory, not verbatim]

How does that qualify as lesbian connotations?

Two females touching each other.

Jack, I am surprised you didn’t know: Lesbians can fly. It’s that simple.

LOL!

I think loser’s got it right there- Peter Pan is a young boy who doesn’t want to grow up, so I guess they can have an older girl with a better voice and more experience and better at dancing and acting or whatever, rather than finding a young enough boy who will not have as much experience and be as confident.

But, 2 women touching doesn’t make them lesbians. It just makes them 2 women touching.

Lesbians can fly!!! I love that!!!

Seriously though – to answer the question at hand…........Loser stated the reason why above, perfectly!

I hope everyone notices that I am keeping my word to Andrew, and am not responding with any kind of insult.

Thank you, I believe that’s already happened enough. Sorry I called you that “a” name.

I’m sorry you did, also.

I don’t suppose you feel any regret for antagonizing me to do that by what you said about me and my screen name?

sarapnsc's avatar

Why was my post removed, I didn’t say anything mean, insulting or demeaning to anyone!

JackAdams's avatar

I was not making a person-specific insult.

I was merely offering a psychological opinion about ANYONE who chooses to degrade themselves, with names like “useless” or “Stupid” or “Moronic” or any similar screen names, if such exist (and if they really do in here, my apologies for mentioning them, are offered).

Psychological opinions of social interactions are not insults, or every psychologist would be guilty of “insulting” their patients.

(As information, I have a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.)

I don’t care what degree you might have. The words, “He is a LOSER” weren’t exactly friendly. And, yes, that’s what you wrote. I made a screen print.

[mod says] Enough guys. There’s been too much of “personal attacks” and the like on Fluther recently and it just isn’t like Fluther spirit. Whatever has happened already is in the past. Let’s focus on answers to the actual Q from now on. Thank you.

I agree with PnL.
