General Question

I am a sorta of accomplice in a crime. Do I deserve any pity?

Asked by luigirovatti (2939points) August 14th, 2020

I was at Is Arutas, in Sardinia, when a man, fairly young, probably a fisherman that lived in this region, crushed an octopus with his bare hands on the ground! MY fault, was not catching him on camera. (;_;) I’ll regret it for the rest of my life. Anyway, just wanted to say it out loud. Goodbye you all.

Oh, sorry for the misunderstanding:

1) Is Arutas is a natural reserve
2) crushed TO the ground

It sounds disgusting. How vigilant are they about protecting their wildlife? And the fact that you’re apparently not in custody, you should be fine. Octopus are considered a food after all, and must be killed to harvest them.

@snowberry: Not to sound tedious, but Is Arutas is a natural reserve.

I understand that. Other than doing nothing, you could turn yourself in and see what they say. Let us know how that goes.

luigirovatti's avatar

@snowberry: Actually, I had a suspect the competent authorities discourage that kind of behavior.

Why pity an admitted criminal?

Are you going to blame this crime on your youth? Your poverty? Your gender? Your race? Your employment status? I don’t see that in your description.

I can see no reason you deserve pity.

luigirovatti's avatar

@elbanditoroso: I point out I was not the one who crushed the octopus, I merely did not catch him on camera.

I don’t really see why you’re bringing this up. It doesn’t seem like a big deal but if you want to flagellate yourself for it, do so.

elbanditoroso's avatar

You self-declared as an accomplice to a criminal act. You said that, I didn’t.

Then I’m an accomplice to many a murder, growing up in farm country. If you work in certain fields you have to emotionally detach to some degree, livestock and seafood are good examples.

luigirovatti's avatar

@KNOWITALL: Lol, you wrote 2 identical answers. Don’t want to make you angry, but it seemed like when Falstaff writes 2 identical letters to the merry wives (to me, at least).

KNOWITALL's avatar

@luigirovatti I’m not angry but I have no idea what you’re talking about. I posted one reply, which is what I see?

I don’t understand your need to feel guilt. Your first instinct wasn’t to pull out your phone to record the activity. It would not have been my first thought either. If the reserve was so concerned for its occupants, they should have cameras all over the park to catch anyone doing something so heinous.

Do you deserve pity? Nope. I admire that you’re not glued to your phone

Why would he do such a horrible thing? How could you just passively watch something so horrifying? Where are you going?

When I was in Greece years ago, I saw a fisherman wearing a octopus like a glove and thrashing against the ground to tenderize it before cooking. Perhaps that;s what your fisherman was doing.

lastexit's avatar

Just saying it out loud, even if we’re not actually in the room with you, is cathartic. Probably it caught you off guard, and when that happens it’s hard to react the way you think you should have.

It seems to me that any pity accrues to the octopus. You are worthy of bafflement and perhaps consternation.
