Why is Trump acquiescing to Democrats plan to give Americans more money than the 600 dollar check in the last bill Congress passed?

Asked by mazingerz88 (28826points) December 23rd, 2020 from iPhone

Trump wants Americans to receive 2K checks not 600 bucks.

Or does he just want to throw a monkey wrench into the hard won agreement that Congress has made? Who can tell what goes on inside his mind? I’m pretty sure he is not concerned for the average American’s welfare.

Hidden in the bill is 10 million dollars for “gender” programs for just one thing. AKA pork.

chyna's avatar

^You can thank Lindsey Graham for that bill.

The $900 Billion, from American tazoayers btw, for Covid relief should be sufficient for every American citizen to receive $3,000.

As with the first stimulus check, most of it (4/5ths this time) was earmarked for pork projects and overseas interests of democrats that have nothing to do with Covid, and offered no help to Americans and small businesses that have been shut down due to Covid.

Pelosi and her cohorts have been holding this money hostage for months—insisting their private interests be given priority.

Both.

1) He wants to show that he has power and is doing so by throwing a monkey wrench into the mix. Did you hear is speech? “and the president next term may be me?”

2) The $600 was a measly amount and the republicans know it. Trump wants to be remembered (in his mind) as a good and generous man.

Who cares, show me the money.

@si3tech: “Hidden in the bill is 10 million dollars for “gender” programs for just one thing. AKA pork.”

It’s not hidden in the bill. It’s part of the omnibus spending bill that’s tacked onto it. So, along with your $10 mil in Pakistan programs, you have $500 million for Israel, $2 billion for air force missile procurement, $2 billion for space force, etc.

The question shouldn’t be “why” Trump now claims to support $2k checks. It’s a crime we don’t have a minimum of $2k direct payments per month.

ragingloli's avatar

here is a breakdown of the 900 billion covid bill
Explain to me, why you think that 4/5th of it are “pork projects”?

kritiper's avatar

He understands the value of a dollar and he understands that $2000 will help a lot more than $600.
AND he wants to get elected in 2024 and that $2000 will buy a lot of votes come then.
AND if paying out $2000 will screw up the economy more than $600 would, well, it’s Biden’s and the Democrats problem to fix.

cookieman's avatar

Listen, I don’t credit Trump with much and, possible motives aside, I am more than happy to take the $2000 per person.

ragingloli's avatar

Maybe he is also doing it to distract from the fact that his is now pardoning convicted war criminals.

“Pork” = “any government spending I don’t like”.

“Any government spending I do like” = not “pork”.

Here is a wild theory from Salon. I don’t go along with it, but with Trump you can never know for certain.

zenvelo's avatar

Trump is pissed at McConnell for acknowledging that Biden won. So he will side with teh House version to screw McConnell.

@Yellowdog you are so full of shit wrong on this. McConnell has blocked movement on this deal since the summer. Mnuchin has repeatedly reached agreement with Pelosi and the House and McConnell repeatedly blocked it.

And most of it is not for overseas favorites of Democrats, but a sweetener for the top 1%.

janbb's avatar

@LostInParadise While I don’t necessarily buy the whole argument in that article, I do think it is to get back at McConnell somehow; not sure what else could be his motivation.

mazingerz88's avatar

Trump is clearly grandstanding and I agree with most of the posts above one of which was he’s being his usual self of derangely craving to be the center of attention.

Why am I certain of this grandstanding?

Because he could just easily sign this bill and release the money ( again with his name on the check which is what possibly got him more votes in the last election ) and then simply ask Congress to pass another bill in record time while he’s still there. Or for Biden to sign.

But he is obviously too absorbed with his own self and not even making a single sincere statement on the number of Americans that are dying daily due to COVID.

Analysis of the Pandemic relief for the richest 1%:

Tucked away in the 5,593-page spending bill that Congress rushed through Monday night is a provision that some tax experts call a $200 billion giveaway to the rich.

It involves the tens of thousands of businesses that received loans from the federal government this spring with the promise that the loans would be forgiven, tax free, if they agreed to keep employees on the payroll through the coronavirus pandemic.

But for some businesses and their high-paid accountants, that was not enough. They went to Congress with another request: Not only should the forgiven loans not to be taxed as income, but the expenditures used with those loans should be tax deductible.

“High-income business owners have had tax benefits and unprecedented government grants showered down upon then. And the scale is massive,” wrote Adam Looney, a fellow at the Brookings Institution and a former Treasury Department tax official in the Obama administration, who estimated that $120 billion of the $200 billion would flow to the top 1% of Americans.

The new provision allows for a classic double dip into the Paycheck Protection Program, as businesses get free money from the government, then get to deduct that largess from their taxes.

1. Either he wants to play daddy on Xmas. No Johnny, I wanted to get you the latest play station and all the games on your wish list but evil Mama said no. Daddy looks like a hero even though he knew Mama was going to say no.
2. Or two. Republicans really weren’t on board with the 600 and planned this with Trump for him to throw a wrench in at the last minute, hoping that Georgian Republicans won’t blame them or Trump and believe they were both being earnest in making things work, but time management didn’t work in their favor but it will be coming a few days after the election. At which time they will just veto the whole thing.
3. Trump is threatening Republican senators for some of them supporting Biden or staying silent and not supporting him and wants to force their hand to either veto him or approve a bill he knows a lot of republicans will be against. Either way he screws them with either choice
4. There is something in the bill that would add more money to HIS big donors and this is his parting gift.

You know, if I did understand how Trump thinks, I’d be worried about my own sanity. I don’t want to get within a million miles of the inside of that one’s head.

LadyMarissa's avatar

He thinks that it will make him look better…PLUS, he’s sticking it to the reps that he feels have betrayed him…PLUS, in his mind, he’s sticking it to Biden because it will screw up the budget!!!

rockfan's avatar

Because it’ll make him look good. And so he can keep up the charade that he cares about the poor and middle class. Also, Nancy Pelosi didn’t agree to the stimulus before because she thought it would help Trump in the election.

LadyMarissa's avatar

Actually Nancy was fighting to get $1,200 checks while the opposition was working hard to drop it to $400 & she settled for the $600 because the right refused to negotiate & she wanted us to get something. That’s why when 45 asked for $2,000 she jumped on it & now 45’s backup ain’t backing him up!!! NONE of that changes the fact that he’s doing it to make himself look good!!!

chyna's avatar

He’s doing it to thumb his nose at the GOP. He knew they would not allow for 2,000. So he left to spend the rest of his time in Florida laughing all the way.

LadyMarissa's avatar

With any luck, our REAL Christmas present from 45 will be that he just won’t come back!!! :}

LadyMarissa's avatar

The real pork in this bill is the cash laid out to corporations who abused the last payout. Everybody should be asking Mitch WHY he won’t approve this bill. He said with his own mouth that his next step will be to cut out Social Security, medicare & medicaid. There would have been enough money there IF Reagan hadn’t raped the funds!!!

This is a time where a Covid Relief bill needs to fund what is needed for Covid relief—not the private, political, or commercial interests of congress members.

A lot of people are out of work, lost their businesses, some have lost family members and a lot are sick. We need to spend our taxpayer money on these needs. Even $2,000 is far insufficient.

President Trump has business sense and compassion enough to realize that. We had the healthiest economy in the world before Covid because of three years of explosive prosperity. We are headed for much darker times economically under Biden and in the aftermath of covid. We may even see more deadly viruses out of China in the dark winter ahead, And there won’t be Trump to commission a vaccine (which many on the left were saying would take years to develop—and many pundits on the left tried to breed distrust in).

This is no time to be spending money on alliances with the left (and right) in the middle east, Asia, etc. The money is needed here.

Darth_Algar's avatar

Only it isn’t a Covid relief bill, it’s an omnibus spending bill. Those who frame it as a Covid relief bill are doing so dishonestly.

LadyMarissa's avatar

@Yellowdog MOST of the pork in this bill was dictated by 45 himself. He wasn’t going to sign anything IF Space Force wasn’t included. Out of the 90 bn, only 1.66 bn was allotted to taxpayers for covid relief. That’s how the reps came up with the $400 payout which was negotiated up to $600 by the dems. Most was earmarked for corporations.

I agree that the bill shouldn’t have had anything other than covid related stuff in it, but 45 threatened to shut down negotiations IF he didn’t get the shit that he wanted included. When you gonna learn…BOTH sides are crooked as shit!!!

ragingloli's avatar

For months they have been blocking relief “because socialism”, only to slap people in the face with a one time 600 dollar pittance that will not even pay for a coffin, all the while they pocket their congressional salaries and free government paid healthcare, and now these covid deniers also get to jump to the front of the vaccine queue.
But you know what those 600 dollars will pay for? Some killer DIY guillotines.
