Do you think my dog has a UTI?

Asked by KNOWITALL (29691points) March 11th, 2021

So my dog had clear discharge from her urinary area today, like a short string of saliva. She has also been licking that area more lately.

The vet can’t see her until Tuesday. Do you think it’s a possible UTI or what could it be?

She’s an old lady lab/chow mix, fixed, around 10 years old. She does have some lipoma’s, but I was told when I got her cancer was ruled out and she had been tested.

She doesn’t act stressed or in any way uncomfortable, except the licking and a little leakage. My male smelled the leakage, snorted and walked away, which is what triggered me to pay more attention.

We keep fresh water out and a grain-free, holistic dog food, which is no different than usual.

It’s something, anyway. Let us know what the vet says.

@Dutchess_III Okay. Yes, I’m a worrier, that’s my girl.
The only thing different lately is that I bought them some Beggin Strips, not sure what else it could be.

Does your vet really want you to wait until Tuesday? Is there somewhere else you could take her?

A quick google search looks like possible UTI or vaginal infection.

I’m not a vet and have extremely limited experience with dogs.

@Cupcake Yeah, I’m on the waiting list in case someone cancels and I can get in sooner.

She’s in zero discomfort. If she exhibits any signs of distress I’ll take her to Emergency Vet, trust me.

It’s impossible to know, but I wanted to say that I wouldn’t be too worried at just this isolated symptom – as long as you have emergency veterinary care available over the weekend.

One path you might consider is getting a urine sample and bringing that in to the vet. There’s a good chance they’d have time for lab work, even if they can’t squeeze in an appointment.

Give her a treat from me.

@longgone That’s what my husband said since she is jumping around being goofy with no discomfort.

But rescuing older dogs comes with some of this. Trust me I wont let her suffer ever.

I will call and see if they’ll do the sample, good idea!!

Tacoma has a big vet clinic with emergency services. Check to see if any vets in your area off urgent or emergency care.

She’s on a short dose of antibiotics just in case, but all is well. Thanks!
