Why Did my Female friend lie about her height?

Asked by Coolguy97 (110points) March 28th, 2021

My female friend who’s 31 has always told me that she’s 6 feet tall. Though yesterday when I was at her place yesterday the topic came up and I decided to measure her. She’s actually 5’11.5. Why would she do this? Was she deliberately lying about her height or rounding up? I’m 23 btw. She was measured in her socks without shoes. I’m 5’4 and male.

Was she measured with or without shoes or socks?

People do lose height as they get older (bone shrinkage).

Why do you care about ½ inch? When she is lying down, you’re the same height.

She is self-conscious about it.

Because she is close enough to 6’ tall to round it conveniently. Because saying “five feet, eleven and a half inches tall” is ponderous and silly.

I tell people I am 5’ tall, even though it is a close approximation at this point.

You may be overthinking this.

She was rounding.

For whatever it’s worth, I have always like tall women. This is a good attribute for her to have.

Were you rounding to one decimal place? Could she actually be 5’11.486530097? Does that make you a liar?

I do the same thing. At one point, when I was younger, I was 6-feet exactly. I’ve shrunk a bit over the years. Probably ¼ inch. I still say 6-feet.

What am I gonna say, 5’11.75” ?

Would you still consider that she was lying if she had rounded down and said she was 5’11”? And are you truly 23 or are you 23-and-however-many-months? I’m not poking fun at you, just trying to demonstrate that people round all kinds of numbers – dollars & cents, miles, etc.

It doesn’t match up to my ex insisting for years that he was 6’4” when I knew damn good and well he was 6’ even. Like I said, this went on for years with him refusing to let me measure him.
Finally he agreed to be measured and got totally pissed at me when it came out to 6’.

The height she was telling you was very close to her actual height. My guess is it wasn’t a lie, it was rounding (as people above said). If it was a few inches off, I’d have said perhaps she enjoyed the novelty of having people think she was six feet when in actuality she was 5 foot 7 or whatever. That’s not the case.

How did you manage to reach up there to measure her?

sadiesayit's avatar

What others have said. Rounding isn’t lying.

But also: For most of the day she’s probably wearing shoes, which means—technically, functionally—she’s usually taller than 6 feet.

Sounds pretty egregious to me. If she’d lie about that she probably lying about other things as well. Maybe she’s not really 31 but 31 and a half.
