Am I correct that people against fetal stem cell research are ok taking monoclonal antibodies?

Asked by JLeslie (65421points) August 21st, 2021 from iPhone

Many of them are part of the anti-vax crowd, or at minimum anti covid vaccine, and some of them talk about the ingredients in the vaccines being harmful, but they will get right on board with promoting Regeneron as a cure. Is that right?

I’m trying to sort it out in my head.

I smell discreet advertisement…

This is a tactics employed in my country when the antivax became a trend here. Vaccines are harmful, so buy our stuff instead!

The original cells came from donated fetal tissue (no stem cells) and they self replicate.

In a statement to NBC News, Regeneron spokesperson Alexandra Bowie said that the company used cells from a cell line called HEK293T. These cells date back to the 1970s and were originally taken from kidney cells in donated fetal tissue. Since then, the cells have become commonplace in research labs, thanks in part to the fact that they can replicate indefinitely, ensuring they never run out. Because of this, the cells are considered “immortalized.”

“HEK293T wasn’t used in any other way, and fetal tissue was not used in this research,” Bowie said. “We did not use human stem cells or human embryonic stem cells in the development of” the monoclonal antibody cocktail.

My take was Republican leaders DeSantis, Trump, and now the Texas Governor promote the use of it, and the far right groups that say covid is just another virus like treatment instead of vaccines and masks, and so they have latched onto this no matter what’s in it.

I think the antibodies should be given more, but I’m not a hypocrite, and I think high rates of vaccination is much better and safer.

@snowberry That’s true all the time in vaccines and treatments and there are still anti-vax and some pro-life extremists screaming about it.

@Mimishu1995 That’s an interesting angle actually.

@JLeslie
It seems we are splitting hairs at this point, But since you brought it up, ”All HEK 293 cells are descended from tissue taken from a 1973 abortion that took place in the Netherlands.

FOX is now telling their viewers to take horse dewormers.
People are ending up calling poison control.

@snowberry I’m not trying to split hairs with you. I’m talking about the screaming anti-vaxxers. I don’t include you in that group.

President Bush put in laws to not allow any new cell lines in American research. I heard that was reversed recently, but I’m not sure if that’s true.

@JLeslie
My point was that one cell line came from an abortion in the Netherlands. The other cell line came from a donated fetus, meaning that it was not obtained from an elective abortion.

I am totally comfortable with Fox News viewers taking horse medicine and dying. It’s good for the rest of us.

I haven’t seen any discussions regarding this issue with vaccines in the Pro-Life crowd lately.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@elbanditoroso Most aren’t dying but it’s sold out in many areas. Luckily most doctors refuse a prescription, too.

@KNOWITALL I don’t think that it’s so much pro-lifers are anti-vax, but more that the anti-vaxxers are pro-lifers, and part of their schtick is the fetal tissue. I know plenty of people who are pro-life who are vaccinated.
