Are logic, integrity, honesty overrated? Is that why they seem to be on the verge of extinction?

Every day there is less and less. When will there be no more?

Logic, integrity and honesty are overrated when they get in the way of political agendas.

“Every day there is less and less”, as in “every day there is less and less”?
Like you counted it, or there’s been research in to it?
Published in a report?

I’m asking because I don’t see that it has changed in the last four decades, the ratings.
I rate them high, as do most of my peers.
Sure, I see some who don’t appear to be rating them as high, and there are some that seem to have given up on it altogether (if they had it in the first place).

And overrated? Over?

They do seem to be instrumentally irrational traits, and basically maladaptive for most social contexts.

They’re things people claim to value, but then don’t actually act like they do, or select for them much when given the chance.

It’s possibly many people don’t know how to recognise things like honesty and integrity. As for logic (or broadly rationality), that likely requires being capable of it in order to recognise and value it in others—most people just aren’t good at logical thinking at all.

They seem to confer little to no advantage in many spheres of life.

They seem to be a negative for career advancement.

Politicians almost never display those traits, and when a rare one does, most seem to either not recognise it, or react with hostile rejection.

They’re either neutral or negative in romance.

I don’t know whether they’re on the verge of extinction or diminishing over time, but it does feel like there’s not really that much of it around, particularly where we’d most need it to be, and people’s proclamations about the value of honesty and integrity could well be just an expression of social desirability bias.

Well, they seem to be nearly non-existent amongst current US Republican Party representatives, and Qanon followers, but I think those are on the wrong side of evolution, myself.

Logic, integrity and honesty are all invaluable, and in American popular/corporate media culture and society, greatly under-rated, which may be why one might perceive them as fading.

@Kropotkin I completely agree, well said. Those character traits don’t get you very far in today’s culture.

I don’t understand your tags. What do human nature, values, and morality have to do with quantum physics, science fiction, and mysterious phenomena? And this is minor, but why would you capitalize mysterious phenomena?

@smudges Fluther will do that sometimes, capitalising tags.

No just few are engaged in honest dialogue as lying seems to take precedence especially for some politicians.

It may look & sound worse than it is – I think mostly due to the distortion effect of how fact & opinion gets mixed through internet discourse. People haven’t really given up on logic, integrity, or honesty – it’s how most of us still measure what truth and facts are. But lately we struggle to find enough to feel sure of anything in public life.

Also there’s a pretty clear distinction between “interpersonal trust”, the ways average people rely on each other in everyday life, and “institutional trust”, faith in governments and elected officials. It’s measurable, and people who study trends public opinion have been reporting the numbers for a long time :

So what does it all mean? I don’t know for sure – but there may be one more thing worth thinking about…

I am certain people still value logic, integrity and honesty and the mystery to me is why they don’t insist on these qualities in the public figures they elect.

They are not overrated. It’s a choice that people are not making.
People’s character and values are just in the shitter.

I gravitate away from people and places that do not value these.
