Not funny, but often were accurate historically.

Short, Taylor, Smith, Cantor.

Some surnames developed from town names rather than skills. Some were the first name of the father.

My maiden name means family of tailors. My grandfather did sew in a factory in the US. I don’t know if his parents sewed also or if it was a coincidence or what. They didn’t come to America, so I know very little about them.

There is a dentist near me named “Justin Payne”.

Where my grandfather used to work, there was a jeweler whose name was Mr. Diamond.

Not quite what you’re asking, but Clint Eastwood is an anagram of “old west action”, which coincidentally characterizes some of the movies he was in.

The name of our local pharmacy is “Graves.”

@Dutchess_III which brings up a tangential question. Over the years, I have observed that there are frequently funeral homes within a mile of every hospital.

Coincidence? Or is there a real connection?

This question seems ironic to me, since most surnames started out with accurate meanings.

John Miller would be a miller, etc.
Leiv Eiriksson was the son of Erik the Red, thought to be named for his red hair and beard.
Some people were named after their land, or the place they came from.
