How often do you buy new luggage?

Asked by JLeslie (65418points) March 23rd, 2022 from iPhone

Does it need to be worn and falling apart?

What motivates you to buy a new piece of luggage, and also what luggage do you have that you really like and would recommend?

My newest piece of luggage is about 8 years old and I like it because it’s extremely light, rolls really well, but I hate that it opens in half, needing to put clothing on both sides. I much prefer a suitcase that you put everything on one side except for some thin front outside pockets. For some reason those are heavier (weighs more) material.

I wait until it is broken I have some Samsonite hard and soft side units that are still good after 20 years. Sure, they are marked up. they also have green reflective tape and black marker in places along the sides so i can find it easily.
I actually like the kind of case that opens in half. One side has my clothes, the other has everything else: shaving kit, electronics, chargers, cables, tools, yo-yo, harmonicas, cookies, thermal imager, geiger counter, ...
I know just where to look if I need something.

@LuckyGuy The suitcase that opens in half doesn’t fit well on the suitcase stand and it can be precarious closing it if the items aren’t packed tight.

I stopped traveling with traditional suitcase about 15 years ago. I use Duffel style packs now. I have a few Patagonia sizes to suit my needs.
They come in enough sizes that can accomodate a weekend or week long trip.
The down side is you wear these like a backpack. I don’t mind the non-existence of broken wheels.

@Forever_Free I have a large duffle with wheels. I inherited it from my grandmother. It holds a lot of clothing! I never use it, but my husband does.

I’ve never had wheels break on any luggage.

I bought a roll aboard carry on sized suitcase in 2007 that I took for a two week trip to Italy. I used it on many travels until a year ago, when the fabric was wearing out. Last Fall I bought a Patagonia roll aboard carry on, and it has served me well.

Like @Forever_Free, I was interested in the backpackable duffels, but then I ran int othe problem of what to do with my small backpack I use for my laptop and iPad. Wearing it on my chest while wearing a full backpack is awkward and inconvenient, and difficult if I have anything else to carry.

I have three small pieces that are carry-on size, one is hard sided, two are soft sided. Both have wheels. I think one of the pieces is from Costco, one is from Home Goods or TJ Maxx, and I don’t remember where the other was from. All three are less than 10 years old.

I have a three piece set from Costco which I bought cheap about two years ago and never opened. It’s hard sided.

I’ve never had wheels break on any of my luggage.

I will supplement the above with a backpack for actually carrying on. I haven’t flown in about four years, due to the pandemic mainly. Driving trips are easier on luggage than flying and dealing with baggage handlers.

Never. I never travel so no need.

I have a black Samsonite that is carry on size, wheeled. It has the double zipper with the gusset that lets you pack more, close the main zipper, then close the gusset zipper, which is a great feature, especially if you have more to pack at the end of a trip— gifts, souvenirs etc.

My girlfriend had a Nautica four wheel roll aboard. Two of the wheels froze, then a third one just broke and wouldn’t roll. It happens if you have to check the luggage

I buy new luggage when I need to. I keep some beat up stuff for flying. I use my really nice luggage when we drive or take a train. The Amtrak people are much easier on luggage than the airport people.

I purposely buy very average looking, nothing special, luggage. I don’t want my luggage to look like anything special is inside.
