Will ios 16 land on my, yet to be purchased, iPhone XS Max?

Asked by rebbel (35549points) June 12th, 2022

Thinking of going the ios route for a change, and I have my eye on a iPhone XS Max.
Now a few days ago I saw an announcement of the newest software for Apple hardware, and I was wondering if my desired phone will get, and be able to run, that newest ios version?
Are there some Apple Genii around?

If it doesn’t come in it, you will definitely be able to install it when it is released. Only really old iPhones sometimes can’t install updates as they come out.

I’m NOT an Apple person, so I might be wrong!!! According to info I saw on Youtube yesterday, the answer is YES!!! I know with my Samsung that I get the latest version of the OS for several years until the phone basically becomes obsolete. It helps to keep them in the good graces of those who truly can’t afford a new phone every year!!!

Oops…IF you properly time your purchase of the phone, it may well come with 16 pre-installed. IF not, it will come with one of the pending upgrades. Either way, you should be good to go!!!

@rebbel To add, new releases are really easy to install. You get a message that it is ready to be downloaded, and when you charge your phone that night while connected to the internet, the new release will automatically be installed.

From the Times, “The new iPhone….operating system will arrive on our phones as free updates thie Fall.”

Yes. The 7 is the latest phone to drop iOS support and it is two generations behind the XS. The XS will probably retain support for at least a couple more years.

I’m an Android slave – but for you the answer is Yes :

Apple has released iOS 15 and confirmed that the software will come to the iPhone XS Max. Highlights of iOS 15 include the ability to include Android users on FaceTime calls, additional details in Apple Maps, statuses for Messages, and much more. Simply open the Settings app and go to General > Software Update to upgrade for free.

iOS 16 will support the iPhone 8, iPhone X, XS, and newer models. Even if it is supported and installs on these older models, not all functions will be available to older iPhones.
Some features will only be available to iPhones with the A12 Bionic chip or newer, which are iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone SE (2nd gen), iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone SE (3rd gen).

Thanks, peeps!
That helped me, especially, @Forever_Free,‘s about the chip (and the phones that have that chip).
Kudos to all.
