Not sure how many fully grown but I have it on good authority that there are 3,143,250 three quarter grown in the world right now.

Ok… I’ll bite
Methodology:
1)Check sales or tonnage of bananas world wide.
2)Assume a staggered growing season of 200 days
3) Assume picked when fully grown
4) Measure mass of typical banana and assume that to be average
5) Divide total yearly tonnage by 200 days and divide by mass of average banana to get number.

1) Approx 26 million metric ton in 2020 source
2) Staggered growing season 200 days Source: estimate. Feel free to correct.
3) Best practice
4) Mass of banana: 120 grams Source FDA and home kitchen scale.
5) Calculation: 26,000,000 tons x 1000 kg/ton x 1000 g/kg / 200 / 120 grams =
1.08 billion.
Context sense check: How many fully grown bananas per person on Earth?
Earth population 8 Billion, So, approx one fully grown banana per 8 people.
That sounds reasonable.
I’ll go with 1.08 Billion minus two for @rebbel and @elbanditoroso

Come on… Is anyone else going to take a stab at it? The more answers, the better the estimate.

The question is not ap-peeling to me any more. But thanks a bunch for your answer.

@LuckyGuy Your calculations are based on banana exports of 26 million metric tons. The FAO of the UN estimate total banana production to be 114 million metric tons annually. Bananas are the staple crop in many African countries where they are eaten but not exported.

Based on this and one tonne being equal to a million grams I estimate there may be 20 billion bananas in existence at any one time; some in our kitchens, some on supermarket shelves and some in transit around the world.

@flutherother Good find! You have a number for the entire yearly crop. What percent are full grown on any given day? .
