Do you have a short attention span?

Asked by RayaHope (7448points) July 27th, 2022

I can have trouble staying on topic sometimes with my mind wandering so much. I am curious about so many things but tend to get sidetracked too easily. Deep concentration is not my best suit and reading can be difficult since I’m dyslexic. Does this happen to you?

Depends on the situation. I was once told by a woman I was involved with, that I had the attention span of a cockroach, which was hurtful. But that was pertaining to relationship crap. Which I fortunately no longer have to deal with. Old age and a long lasting marriage have their advantages. Other than that, my concentration skills are good.

@Nomore_Tantrums Congratulations on a long-lasting marriage.

@RayaHope Well TY very much. But all credit is due to my wife, putting up with me for all of these years : )

Mine was always short but has gotten even shorter since I take frequent breaks for internet checking!

RayaHope's avatar

@janbb I can be so forgetful at times. I’ll start something and then start something else and forget all about the other thing I was doing. I’m still young, I hate to see what I’ll be like when I get old like 50 or more.

Yes and no.

I’m easily distracted.
But I also tend to hyperfixate.

It’s easy to focus if you prioritize:
• Sex…
• Someting else (I think)
• Other stuff, that’s not sexual

There. Just try it and pretty soon you’ll be a genius. Everyone will want you.

For your mind.

RayaHope's avatar

@JLoon I think that one of my problems is thinking of sex too much. I try to put that out of my head because it gets me all messed up. It’s like all around me in my everyday life. I have to hide those feelings.

I’m like @raum – easily distracted, but I also hyperfixate. Of the two, I hyperfixate more. My apartment might look like an ogre just ran through it, but boy that one drawer is perfection personified! One time I took the vacuum cleaner apart and washed the parts (except the motor) in the bathtub because I couldn’t get it clean enough with a dust cloth.

On the other hand, sometimes a search for something on the internet will fill most of the day, but 3 days later I’ve forgotten what was so damned important.

RayaHope's avatar

@smudges Oh don’t get me started on some of the things I OCD about. Patterns are big for me like if a tile or edge of something is off…grrrr, I go crazy. Centering things get me too like a piece of artwork that is crooked or off center.

I’ll tell you in a minute or two when I finish writing my memoirs.

Nah, it’s just the way these shorts ride up.

RayaHope's avatar

@eyesoreu Listen, mister, start wearing long pants.

Big boy pants, yes m’aam.

As I get older it gets shorter.

I have little patience for doing activities I don’t want to do as I age, so It’s hard for me to focus on tasks that bore me or aren’t fun or interesting. It’s enough already. Years and years of things I don’t want to do.

RayaHope's avatar

@JLeslie you sound a lot like me right now, wonder how I’ll be when I get older. I seem to get sidetracked so easily.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Our attention span has been shortened by sound bites and the internet. (This is a shout out to you who write walls of text. We ain’t reading them!)

JLoon's avatar

@Dutchess_III – Get to the point will you? ;D

RayaHope's avatar

@JLoon LOL! not so long next time.
