Should The Bible be pulled from school libraries?

The rising Christian Nationalists (the rightest of the right) movement has been insisting that “bad books” be removed from the shelves of our schools so as to not negatively influence our children. As inevitably happens, a parents requested that The Bible be removed due to the sex & violence that it teaches our kids. I bet this same parent drags their kid to church every Sunday morning!!! Anne Frank’s Diary was another requested. I seriously doubt that any child has ever check out The Bible, but that’s beside the point. What is the right wing so afraid of & do you agree that the Bible should be pulled from schools???

Neither of those books should be pulled from school libraries, but I’d much rather lose The Bible than The Diary of Anne Frank.

According to their artificial rules, YES.

But in real life, NO because that’s for the school and the librarian to determine.

I had conversation recently about what the role was for religion (Bible) in schools. I have a huge problem with school prayer.

I don’t have any problem with teach the Bible as Literature or Bible as a Historical Document as long as there’s no preaching or prayer in the classroom.

Like it or not, the Bible is an important historical document – just look at how it has been used to murder people over the centuries. So it should be taught with that perspective.

For that matter, Mein Kampf should be in libraries as well , for the same reasons.

No. I could change my mind, but I’m not sure any book should be banned in general, or pulled from a school’s library.

No. Of course not.

I’m not a big fan of banning books. It comes too close to book burning. But on the flip side, I’m not a fan of school officials pushing ideology either. Would you want teachers in a public school pushing the bible on all students? Convincing them that they need to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior? If the answer is no, then would you agree it is wrong for them to push CRT or Trans studies on public school students?

The books people tend to want to ban are ones I usually think should be required reading.

No, of course not, but this request illustrates the exact problem with the “defer to the parents” attitude at public schools. You must cater to their every whim and request, no matter how absurd. It also hopefully drives home the point that supporting the banning of books does not mean that only books you don’t like will be banned.

I’m sickened by this interest in banning books. NO book should be banned, EVER. I don’t care what it says or is about. Banning books is that exact same thing as banning THOUGHT! Banning ideas banning creativity banning people.

Reminds me of this scene [NSFW-violence/nudity].

@seawulf575 it would be illegal for any teacher to push any religion on the kids.

@RayaHope….what abouuuut….Debbie does Dallas?

elbanditoroso's avatar

@Dutchess_III if I remember correctly, Debbie doesn’t actually get to Dallas, but she has a whole lot of fun on the way there.

Blackwater_Park's avatar

@Dutchess_III Teachers often push whatever their political/religious beliefs are. It may be subtle, but they do it.

RayaHope's avatar

@Dutchess_III I never read Debbie does Dallas but sure if it’s a book it should be fine. Banning any book is just a terrible idea.

LadyMarissa's avatar

@Dutchess_III She’s NOT old enough to know about that movie/book!!! Still, would the world come to an end IF it was sitting on the shelf??? UNLESS some parent makes a big deal out of it being there, I bet NO kid would ever check it out!!!

The Christian Nationalists are creating an interest in books most kids did NOT ever care to look at until now. Now that they are being told that they aren’t allowed to read them, they are chomping at the bit to get a copy so they see what they are missing!!!

It’s graphic pornograohy @RayaHope.

The Bible wasn’t being used as a teaching tool. It was another book sitting on the shelf just in case some kid wanted to look at it. My guess is that it was NEVER checked out.

Debbie Does Dallas was way ahead of its time. It was one of the most popular early porn videos ever made, and is/was a classic. Put it this way – if you were a historian studying popular culture in the US in the 1970s, this would be right near the top of your list.

And to make my answer apprioriate to the OP’s question, a couple of the sex scenes were filmed in a college library – how about that for versimilitude!

And there was a Bible just above her feet in several scenes!!!

No We have to be better than them. We
try to pull the Bible were being as childish and moronic as they are. I refuse to stoop to that level. As for as Anne Frank I don’t like the sound of that a bit. And I’ll be damned if I’ll have a Holocaust in my country. They go to harassing my friends or neighbors it’s on. They want violence go ahead and bring it. I was once approached by a Klansman in Louisiana to join their little fraternity. I told him to go suck a fucking egg. And when he tried to threaten me, I told him to come see me some time I’d meet him at the door with my 12 gauge. Never was bothered again. I’ll do the same to anti semite Neo Nazi fucks. Just sayin’. I’ve had it with these assholes. Keep your powder dry freinds, the day may be coming.

Of course not.

From a historic or literature point of view, neither should be pulled. If students were supposed to use the Bible for religious indoctrination, then that’s a different issue.
