Was this rude to say?

Asked by Cindy1302 (806points) September 12th, 2022

I was listening to my local radio station this morning, and the guy was talking about the news. He said that a women on a cruise ship was swimming in the Bahamas and was killed by a shark. Then he said “I guess a bigger boat didn’t help”. I just thought that was totally out of line, and I probably won’t listen to that station anymore. What do you think?

I hear morning stations say stuff like that all the time. Their goal is to be lighthearted and funny, because in the morning, people are usually tired and dreading the work day.

In light of someone being killed, YES it was totally disrespectful.

I find it an unnecessary thing to say!!! Not listening to the station is one remedy…OR…you can call in a complaint on the person saying it!!! The station won’t know why you quit listening unless you tell them. Might not do any good, but they may have had a bunch of complaints as well. At least you can feel like you did something.

Obviously virtually the same comment that was used by Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) in the original Jaws movie.

I won’t say that the comment was rude, but it was totally uncalled for considering that a woman had just been killed by a shark. The remark should never have been made and the boss of the radio station should have taken to task the person who made the comment and either issued an apology for the remark live on the radio or better still insisted that the person who said it give an apology.

I didn’t even understand his attempt at a joke.

I too am confused by the bigger boat. Who assumes a bigger boat a shark repellant?

See shock humor. I actually laugh at stuff that’s so horrible it’s funny. Maybe that’s a character flaw.

But it needs to make sense. Where’s the joke?

I think it was a jaws reference.

I understand the joke, I just don’t think it’s funny. Bad taste humor is popular in morning radio.
If you don’t like it, tune to a different station. If it upsets you, complain to advertizers.

I actually think it is funny, but I tend to like grim humor, and often say it myself as a response to horrible situations.

I suppose it’s still rude.

@Zaku You left me speechless. I think it was rude.
