Can you help me find a firm mattress topper?

Asked by Jons_Blond (8253points) December 27th, 2022 from iPhone

Our mattress is going on 20 years and gives us no support. Both my husband and I wake up with back pain every morning. We can’t afford a new mattress right now so I’ve been looking for a mattress topper.

We need something firm that will give us support. We both wish we could tent camp all the time because sleeping on the ground with minimal cushion under us leaves us with no back pain.

Every topper I’ve looked at seems to offer more cushion and softness and that’s not what we need. Do you have any recommendations?

Mattress toppers offer very little support. Their function is to cushion. Instead of a topper, why not use a firm plywood board under the mattress? That’s what we have done.

I’ve never thought to go to a topper for firmness; they are generally acquired for comfort on top of a firm mattress. I would just check and compare the density on the ones that are available. Mine is a firm memory foam with egg-carton structure on one side of the 4-inch pad. I’ve been using it since 2011 and it’s just like it was the day I bought it. I don’t know if you can still buy them but it is a Slumber Solutions 4” Memory Foam Topper. I think I bought it on Overstock but it may have been ebay. Good luck.

Note: I just checked and ebay still have this one for around $120.

I put a piece of plywood underneath a too soft foam mattress (on top of the box spring) it did help !

As already mentioned they aren’t necessarily made for support. I would just buy a new mattress. 20 years is about all you will get out of a mattress before its springs start to go soft. The last time I change my mattress it was for the same reason and it was well worth every penny. I also went for a firm bed. Not rock hard firm but pretty firm. It made such a world of difference. Funny enough in my guest room I bought a foam mattress and its a few years old and still feels pretty firm. I mean you do sink in a little but it feels like the kind of foam you would find in a well made sofa cushion. Pretty inexpensive and has no sides sagging or a dip in it. But then again its a guest bed. I actually have no aches or pains sleeping in it and non of my quest with back issues ever complained. Only thing is that it can make you hot in the summer.
BTW, I ordered it online and at the time for a queen, it cost about the same of some bed toppers.

It might be more advantageous to just get a piece of ½” plywood and place it under the mattress.

Get rid of the mattress and replace it (or keep it and top it off) with a hard surface (such as plywood) covered by 1” foam rubber. You’ll sleep so much better.
