Is there a song about the place where you live?

Asked by Jeruba (55832points) January 9th, 2024

Define the place as broadly or as narrowly as you like. The range is as broad as the universe and as narrow as your room.

What is the gist of the song?

So many about various places in Florida. Here’s a link https://a-z-animals.com/blog/the-best-songs-about-florida/ I’ve lived all over the peninsula of Florida.

I’ll also mention where I used to live, Memphis, TN. I love so many songs that reference Memphis:

Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves by Cher.

Proud Mary by Tina Turner.

Walking in Memphis by Marc Cohn.

Memphis, Tennessee by Elvis.

There are many many more songs.

@chyna I love that song.

Having lived in about 10–12 states, I picked a song or two from a few of them.

“Nebraska” – Bruce Springsteen “Nebraska” is sung as a first person narrative of Charles Starkweather, who along with his teenage girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, murdered 11 people over an eight-day period in 1958.

“Omaha” – Counting Crows

“Omaha, Nebraska” – Groucho Marx

“Moonlight In Vermont” – Frank Sinatra

“South Dakota Morning” – Bee Gees

“Carolina In My Mind” – James Taylor

“Foggy Mountain Breakdown” – Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs

“Walking in Memphis” – Marc Cohn

“Dixieland Delight” – Alabama

“Rocky Top” – Osborne Brothers

There are several about Alaska. John Denver’s “Alaska and Me” and “American Child” are AK themed, as is the BeeGees “Road to Alaska”. Lou Reed even gives Alaska a mention in “Caroline Says”. Johnny Horton’s “North to Alaska” and “When It’s Springtime in Alaska” are kinda kitzy but fun. More that don’t come to mind right now by title but will note Portugal.The.Man originated in Alaska and several of their songs/videos are Alaska focused. Many of their videos have been filmed here and much of their family still lives in my general area, in fact. The late Hobo Jim(Jim Varnos”) was considered THE Alaska singer/balladeer with many, many songs that mention Alaska by name and/or were inspired by it.

Not currently that I know of. Several for when I lived in NE Ohio.

elbanditoroso's avatar

@seawulf575 REM did the song ‘Cuyahoga’ about the river that caught fire.

And Crosby Stills Nash and Young did ”[four dead in] Ohio” in memory of the Kent State students that were killed by the National Guard.

seawulf575's avatar

@elbanditoroso Yep. Bob Dylan mentioned “Ashtabula” in the song You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go. Also there was a local artist that wrote a song called Grand River Lullaby. The Pretenders did My City Was Gone. Ian Hunter did Cleveland Rocks which was used as the theme song for the Drew Carey Show. There are others out there.
