All time favorite love quote?

Asked by thatswhatshesaid (65points) October 7th, 2008

What’s the ONE love quote that makes you feel the most emotional (be it anger, sadness, happiness…etc)?
I just love these kind of things and want to see how many I can collect!

do love lyrics qualify? :)

“I’ve been sleeping in a cardboard box,
Spending every dollar at the liquor shop,
And even though I know I haven’t got a lot
I try to give you love until the day you drop.”

I find this sonnet by Shakespeare one of the most moving and true statements about love.

“When is disgrace with Fortune and men’s eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon myself and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,
Desiring this man’s art and that man’s scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least,
Yet in these thoughts my self almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
(Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth) sings hymns at heaven’s gate,
For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings,
That then I scorn to change my state with kings.”

There are too many to choose from. I am very fond of this quote by Tolstoy:

“Love is life. All, everything that I understand, I understand only because I love. Everything is, everything exists, only because I love. Everything is united by it alone.”

The music broke from the piano like clear cold water from a prophet-touched rock, pouring and splashing around us while her fingers leaped and spread, curled and stiffened and melted and flickered in magic pass and streaked lightning above the keyboard. Never before had she played for me… because we were lovers now, was she free to play…?

I had only one man say this to me once; but I remember.

“Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.”

“Deep within us—no matter who we are—there lives a feeling of wanting to be lovable, of wanting to be the kind of person that others like to be with. And the greatest thing we can do is to let people know that they are loved and capable of loving.”

— Fred Rogers

Oh! I also really like this one:

“Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn’t it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses, you build up a whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life…You give them a piece of you. They didn’t ask for it. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn’t your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like ‘maybe we should be just friends’ turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It’s a soul-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. I hate love.”

Following is my loose translation of the madrigal ‘Ojos Astrales’ (Astral Eyes) by José P. H. Hernández:

If God was to blind all sources of light, the Universe would be lit with your eyes. But should God, finding that blasphemous, were to tear out your eyes out of rage, the universe would be lit by the memory of your gaze.

Original text in Spanish:
” Si Dios un dia cegara toda fuente de luz, el universo se alumbraria con esos ojos que tienes tu. Pero si lleno de agrios enojos por tal blasfemia, tus lindos ojos Dios te arrancase, para que el Mundo con la alborada de tus pupilas no se alumbrase, aunque quisiera Dios no podria tender la noche sobre La Nada, porque aun el Mundo se alumbraria con el recuerdo de tu mirada.”

Now, this isn’t my all time favorite love quote or anything, but I was in the drugstore the other day and heard an old Meatloaf song (Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad) on the radio. Of course I remember hearing it as a kid in the 70’s, and didn’t quite understand it wasn’t really a love song – but years later, as an adult, the lyrics kind of stuck with me in a depressing way.

“I want you. I need you. But there ain’t no way I’m ever gonna love you. Now don’t be sad, ‘cuz two out of three ain’t bad.”

Not sure on the accreditation but:

“love is giving someone the power to break your heart, and trusting them not to”

that to me is how we enter into loving someone

Love further complicates an already confused way of life.

Falling in love is the single most expressive feeling a person can have. Losing that love suddenly, can be the most painful feeling a person can have.

Come, gentle night, come, loving, black-browed night,
Give me my Romeo. And when I shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun.
