How can I play PAL region 2 DVDs in the US?

Asked by AstroChuck (37609points) October 20th, 2008 from iPhone

I have series one of BBC’s Life On Mars and thought my Sony DVD player could play it (someone told me Sony’s were “region free” and could play PAL) but, unfortunately, was wrong. Is there some kind of adapter or something that I could buy in order to play my discs? Do I need to get a different DVD player? Is there an inexpensive option I can take?

I am sure there are a lot of people who will answer more able to answer than me. One work around would be to use your computer to convert the format to NTSC.

I heard from a friend that he punched in some code into his panasonic DVD player which he found in the net for free and all formats worked for him than.

You can punch codes into your player, but not all players have codes. There is a site that has the lists of codes and which players have them. I’ll see if I can find it for you, I have it somewhere. We looked ours up, unfortunately there isn’t one for our player.

Coming from Australia, and having relatives constantly sending us PAL DVDs even though we’ve told them we can’t play them on “normal” American players, we found it was easier to buy a player that could play both regions. Those aren’t easy to buy, we found that you can’t just go down to your local Best Buy and buy one off the shelf.

I have a Sony DVP-NC800H 5 disc changer. Does anyone know if that player can have a code that will allow me to play PAL? And if so, how would you enter it?

This guy is reporting that the region free code didn’t work for him but hecould have been doing something wrong. It might be worth a shot. Follow the link in the post for the actual code and how to enter it.

It’s much easier to get a region free software player for your computer. VLC does the job nicely. If worse comes to worse, you can sit in front of your computer and watch it.

I’ll keep looking.
