I can't sleep until atleast 2am...

Asked by johnny0313x (1855points) November 12th, 2008 from iPhone

I have trouble sleeping – always have. I’m a late night person I like staying up late and having my quiet alone time. However as I get older I need to conform with society and work in the morning and actually wake up on time. I’ve been lucky so far and have had flexible jobs. I’ve tried to figure out why I stay up late and it used to be from being online or watching a movie and part of that is the reason today but I have noticed going to bed early makes me a little depressed almost like a sinking feeling in my stomach. I think this is really odd and probably not normal. Anyone have any ideas on this? I think I’m afraid I’ll miss out on something – which I no sounds like a child. Mostly tho I’ll lay there and not be able to sleep and the idea is kinda depressing as I said.

I am exactly the same way. I have been all my life. Cant figure it out. I’ll be exhausted alll day long wanting to just go home and sleep. Once 10–11 hits WIDE AWAKE, until at least 2.
2:15am right now :P

I’m definitely a night person as well. I often don’t feel sleepy until well into the AM. A friend of mine with similar tendencies recently told me that this is known as Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome. It’s good to know we’re not alone. :-)

Totally normal. I’m the same way. I just consider 10 pm – 2 am my productive time, and get as much done as I can then. I’ve worked my schedule around it. So I just try to work with it. I feel the most productive, clear, and centered at that time of day. You’re normal.

or a glass of wine or cup of warm milk. Or a turkey sandwich.
Are your late nights interfering with your days?

I have had insomnia for a decade so every night I take Excedrin PM and either read a boring book, like a cheesy crime novel, or watch something really boring on TV, like Law and Order. The opening music alone is enough to knock me out.

I’m frequently awake until 4 or 5 AM. Have had insomnia my whole life…guess I’m just a night person.

Try taking melatonin.

I used ot be an insomniac and that stuff puts me right to bed. I haven’t had it do anything weird to me either.

I have the same problem, flexible work/school and chronic insomnia that has me forcing myself to wakeup at 8AM some days and staying in bed ‘till 4PM other days.. Read up on sleep hygeine which are a series of hints on your lifestyle and actions that can help you sleep.

But here are the 2 things that have helped tremendously with me:

-Taking melatonin before bed, a natural supplement you can get off the shelf at the drugstore

-Wake up earlier and at the same time every day. Seriously, there’s a lot of crap you can do to help you fall asleep but if you wake up consistently the rest will take care of itself. Wakeup early. Wakeup at the same time, everyday.

Or how bout this…

We could all work together at the same company. What could the hours be? Of course you could come in any time you wanted… but maybe the hours would be 5 pm – 1 am?

Something like that.

@TL: “come in”?! Noooooooooooo…we should telecommute! As soon as you start such a company, let me know. I’m in!
