Have you ever had a dream and woke up absolutely terrified, to the point that the thought of going back to sleep made you even more afraid?

Asked by acebamboo77 (720points) November 21st, 2008

I had a dream last night, and I wouldn’t say it was a horrific nightmare, just a bothersome dream. I woke up and I was so absolutely afriad, of what I cannot say, why I cannot say, but the feeling was horrible. I laid in bed, and knew I had to go back to sleep, but closing my eyes made the fear even worse.
I have never experienced anything like it before. I was just wndering if it’s happened to anyone else, and if so how you dealt with it?

Yeah, I think it’s common. Going back to sleep probably won’t hurt you, but then again, staying up never hurt anyone either. Do what you have to do?

I frequently have very vivid dreams. Some are extremely elaborate w/ seemingly endless plots and themes.

Interestingly, they were even more magnified while I was pregnant.

If I wake up from one that it distressful, I actually feel an overwhelming peace and gratitude that it was just a dream. I usually find it very easy to go back to sleep….

I once had a disturbing dream. I woke up disturbed. I went back to sleep. The dream continued along with the villain saying I couldn’t escape by waking up—that it wasn’t that easy. I woke up again. I did not go back to sleep. Eff that! I turned on a lamp and read. I didn’t have to be anywhere the next day, thank god. If I’d needed the rest, I probably would have counted on coffee to get me through the next day because after that dream there was simply no more sleeping that night.

The next night, the feeling had faded enough for me to sleep and I didn’t continue the dream. I think something similar happens to everyone at some point. It sucks and makes for a hard night and a hard day, but it is shared enough as an experience that others will be able the sympathize or empathize.

Yep, I normally turn on the tv and try to forget what I was dreaming

Yes! It’s horrible! It’s happened to me a few times… but it’s all in your mind… it’s hard to go back to sleep but when you have things to do the next day, you definitely have to go back to sleep… so whenever that happens try to concentrate on something else… think of a pleasant place… maybe the beach and you being there with the people you love the most… after all love is like a medicine so you can use that.

My first husband committed suicide and my son is bipolar (24years old.) I had a dream that he called me in tears saying “I walked the bridge.” I don’t know what it meant, but I panicked. I text-ed him right away. He was OK. He laughed at me.

I’ve had dreams where I wake up really really angry or upset with someone, and it’s kind of hard for me to transition into being not angry for a few minutes, but I’ve never had a dream so scary that I couldn’t go back to sleep. It sounds like no fun, though!

Yes, I have. I have really really weird dreams and I can remember them quite clearly.
Once I dreamed that my family were trying to kill me, and when I was running away I was running over chopped up pieces of my friends’ bodies but it was dark so I couldn’t see where I was running to avoid them, I just knew that I was. This just freaked me out so much that I didn’t want to go back to sleep, but I didn’t want to go down and be comforted by anyone either cause they had been trying to kill me in my dream!

i really dont know… the most recent dream i had had such an elaborate plot.. and twists at that… i cant explain why i was so afraid or what prompted it… i looked up dream symbolism from some of the stuff in the dream… and there were alot of things that symbolized guilt…
and if thats the case… if that is in fact true.. im not sure what i am feeling guilty about

yes and chances are something else in your life caused you to reflect during your dream. you may be stressed or there are some events you may feel are out of control.

Yes I have bad dreams a lot and often fear going back to sleep. I also find for a few days after the dream I hate the idea of going to bed.
