How do I share large files among a small group of people?

Asked by Xpress411 (120points) November 25th, 2008

I’d like to share large mp3 and video files with a select group of friends. I’d like the application to be easy for them and private. I set up an ftp, but was wondering if there is anything easier that I’m not aware of.

A rapidshare or megaupload might work, but the ftp is probably easier.

Try dropbox. I use it and I love it.

With the videos, how big are we talking here? 700MB? 4.6GB? When you start getting to big file sizes like this, you encounter a few issues you don’t see in small file sizes, such as the file system needing to be a certain one, as well as the issue of corrupt packets in data transfer. Not to mention the free sites sure won’t let you share these big boys.

Honestly, you might want to consider a low-tech solution here: portable hard drive. There was a wonderful one called The Glory Machine shared between my university friends, chock full of movies and shows and music of all types. It really was an ideal solution for many reasons: no bandwidth costs, MUCH faster than downloading/FTPing, easy for others to add their own shows and movies to (drag and drop and leave it for a bit – much easier than installing and configuring a program), and very easy to pass around since friends always see each other. Considering the prices of hard drives continues to drop, you can get a terrabyte hard drive for less than $160 now, which is way more space than you’d ever need, we’re talking more than 200 full data hi-def DVD ripped movies, more than one thousand regular DVD ripped movies at ~700MB each, two to three thousand TV show episodes. Heck half that, go with a 500GB drive for $90, that’s less than $20 between five friends. Well worth the investment.

+1 for Dropbox. Depending on how much you’re needing to share..

I also use dropbox.

What type of files are we talking? What types of general sizes?

How about pownce? I used to use a service called TubesNow, but it has gone belly up :-(

dropbox is awesome! 2gb for a free account. Why not signup for a few free accounts?

Pownce looks promising, but how large of files can you send?

I use drop.io for small and quick shares. You can only have up to 100mb per page, but you get to create a password protected directly link-able site in seconds. Plus you don’t have to create an account to use the website.
