What is your favorite 'holiday' song...and why?

Asked by bythebay (8214points) November 29th, 2008

I adore the music of the season, with all it’s simplicity and sentimental messages. What song makes you happy, takes you back, makes you sing out loud or cry? In case you were going to lose sleep wondering; two of my favorites are Sing Joy by Peter Mayer and Holy Night…not so much because of their message(s) – I just love to hear them.

Oh Holy Night because I remember singing along with it on my grandparents’ player piano.

I have to admit that I get rather tired of hearing Christmas carols for a month before Christmas. We have a few radio stations that start on Thanksgiving and play only Christmas songs until Christmas.

But, that said, I love ‘What Child is This’. I like more nontraditional Christmas music. Kathy Mattea has a Christmas CD called, ‘Good News’ that I love and I can listen to year round. In fact, I will be seeing her Christmas concert in a few weeks and that will definitely put me in the Christmas spirit!

I have to say “O Holy Night”, too. It brings back memories of singing in our choir in Texas, & I’ve sung it as a solo, also. I have a beautiful snow globe that the music box in it plays it.

The Christmas Song is my favorite.
You know…chestnuts roasting on an open fire…

It’s just so nostalgic.

Away in a Manger. Simple, sweet.

Oh, and Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella is my favorite to play on the piano.

Hahaha, I’m gonna break away from the pack and say Jingle Bell Rock, it’s just so upbeat and cheerful I love it. But then again. I love White Christmas. Oh and Baby It’s Cold Outside (but Zooey Deschanel and Wil Farell in the movie Elf)

I’m okay with most Christmas songs, it’s just these songs they obviously retooled to be about Christmas because they would otherwise be unmarketable that I can’t stand..

This is the song about Harold the pig
Harold the Christmas pig…

My sister and I LOVE Boney M.‘s Mary’s Boy Child but I think my all time favorites are All I Want for Christmas by Mariah Carey and Santa Baby the Eartha Kitt version.

dynamicduo's avatar

I can play a sweet version of O Holy Night on my guitar while singing, so I feel it’s the best.

galileogirl's avatar

I really love the hymns because they take me back to childhood. The version of O, Holy Night I like best is by Celtic Woman. I also like a capella versions of Ave Maria and Silent Night. The one that I can actually sing is Adeste Fideles but no Christmas Eve music fest is complete without Dogs Barking Jingle Bells.

I love ‘the little drummer boy’ and I love listening to Burl Ives and Bing Crosby. To me, that means Christmas.

Rufus Wainwright has a brilliant song on the 2006 McGarrigle’s Carnegie Hall Christmas concert album which contains these lyrics:

Don’t forget Jesus, Mary and Joseph
Running through the desert, impoverished and hopeless;
Don’t forget Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
Running from the law King Herod had impos-ed.

Don’t forget that what kept them afloat
(Running through the desert doesn’t take a boat!) -
Don’t forget that what kept them above
Was un-con-di-tion-al love

And they were, each one, quite odd:
A mensch, a virgin, and a god

O Holy Night (Nat King Cole), Silent Night (this was my bed-time lullaby year-round), and the unconventional but lovely The Rebel Jesus by Jackson Brown:

But please forgive me if I seem
To take the tone of judgement
For Ive no wish to come between
This day and your enjoyment
In this life of hardship and of earthly toil
We have need for anything that frees us
So I bid you pleasure
And I bid you cheer
From a heathen and a pagan
On the side of the rebel jesus.

“Baby It’s Cold Outside”, the original version by Dean Martin, will get my whole family dancing and singing (usually in the kitchen while cooking Christmas Eve dinner)!

Have any other flutherites heard Kevin Bloody Wilson’s xmas songs? Very funny, and incredibly rude.

WARNING The language used in the lyrics to his songs are, in some people’s opinion, rather extreme, including the dreaded “C” word, so if you have delicate sensibilities I suggest you give them a miss.

Christmas Song

Ho Ho Fucking Ho

Santa Got Stoned At Christmas

I love I’ll Be Home for Christmas. Although it’s a bit sad, it’s so sweet. No one should ever be alone on Christmas.
